This week we celebrated Dr. Seuss's birthday with our 6th grade buddies! Students read books together and made a special hat from the story, Cat in the Hat. Students in room 5 continued to research information on big cats (tigers, lions, and cheetahs). Ask your child what new information they learned about big cats! Students also learned that cheetah's are the fastest land mammal, we were able to see who was the fastest mammal in our class! Students in room 6 started studying all about marsupials! This week students also continued with their writing and handwriting of lowercase letters. In math students learned about solid (3d shapes) and flat shapes! They were excited to find many solid shapes all around us in real life objects such as at school and at home. They also found out which shapes can slide, stack, or roll. This week students in room 5 started doing research on big cats. Students listened to some books and watched videos on big cats with a focus on lions, tigers, and cheetahs. They also learned these animals are different type of eaters. They learned about the meaning of the words, carnivore, herbivore, producer, and consumer. Students in room 6 learned about their teeth! They did many fun activities such as learning the names for different teeth in their mouth, learned how to brush their teeth and talked about different types of food that are good or not so good for their teeth. In math we concluded our chapter on numbers 1-100. Students practiced their numbers 1-100 by playing games and practiced finding the missing numbers on a hundreds chart. This week in music students were introduced to different types of instruments from the music families (i.e.: string and percussion instruments). 3/10 Field trip to the LA Zoo We started this short week with learning about a few famous presidents from our past. Students learned about George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Barack Obama. Students made a George Washington hat and an American flag that they got to wear and wave proudly at our patriotic assembly. At the assembly students heard and sang along to many patriotic songs. In math we are continuing with numbers to 100 as we practiced making different numbers using cubes and finding missing numbers. This week we celebrated the 100th day of school! Students prepared for the day by making necklaces, crowns, and shirts. On the 100th day, we paraded through the first grade classrooms to showoff our 100th day of school attire! Students also worked with their sixth grade buddies to practice counting their collection of 100 items by 10s, 25s, or 50s. In math they weighed their collections and determined which was the heaviest and which was the lightest. They also made a snack bag full of 100 snack items! The students also enjoyed a very special visit from Zero the Hero! In hebrew this week they wrapped up their study of creation by discussing what was created on each day and the reason why it was created. 2/16 K-6 Professional Development day--No School for students 2/17 Free Dress: wear red, white, and blue We are so excited to be getting close to the 100th day of school! Students started their 100 days of school book where they showed 100 in different ways. They worked on their 100 days of school book. They also made their 100th day of school crowns with 100 stickers, foam shapes, or drawings. In math we took a closer look at the one hundreds chart and started skip counting by 10s. In the next few weeks we will be focusing on numbers 20-100. In art students learned how to draw birds and in science class students started studying animals! In Mrs. Katan's hebrew class, students have been learning about creation. They learned what was created on each day and the reason for the order of creation. They continued to work in their science books as they learned about oviparous animals and observed different types of clouds. ** Don't forget to have your child return their bag with 100 items to school on Monday February 8!** We hope you're continuing to work on your 100th day of school shirt! 2/11 100th Day of school celebration! *Don't forget to wear your 100th day shirts 2/15 President's Day--No School 2/16 K-6 Professional Development day--No School for students We started off the week at Camp Alonim in the beautiful outdoors! Our students had a fantastic time completing a scavenger hunt, playing games, doing an art project, Israeli dancing with their 6th grade buddy, singing, and eating a delicious lunch. This week we also finished up our study on communities. Students worked together to make different community buildings such as a hospital, a school, and a store. In math we started counting by 2's and 5's to 20. In Mrs. Katan's hebrew class, students are continuing to learn about the story of creation. 2/16 Professional Development Day No Students This week students learned that there are special writing rules that they follow when they are writing such as starting a sentence with a capital letter, using spaces, and a period at the end of the sentence. In social studies, we continued learning about community. We learned about many community helpers that do great things for our community such as a doctor, mail carrier, and teacher. In math students were sorting and classifying by color, shape, size, and special features. In hebrew students continued with learning about the story of creation. They also learned about the holiday of Tu B'Shevat and all the things that trees give us. We are looking forward to a fun filled day on Monday! We read a story about different community workers. This week we started a new unit on community! Within this unit students will be learning all about the residential, commercial, industrial, and agricultural communities. Students thought deeply about their own community and if they live in a urban, suburban or rural community. They wrote about where they live and created a map of their neighborhood with the help of their 6th grade buddy! They also created the front of their house with a paper bag. Students thought about what they are a member of. Students realized that they are a member different kinds of communities such as their neighborhood, family and Wise school. In math we finished learning and had practice with numbers 1-20. We ended our week learning and celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and all that he has done to make our world a better place. In Mrs. Katan's class students finished learning the hebrew words of winter clothing. Students started learning about the next unit of creation. 1/19 Professional Development Day Student Free 1/25 Tu B'Shevat Camp Alonim Field Trip ****7:30-2:30**** Welcome back! We hope you all had a wonderful winter break. This week students explored and thought deeply about their resolutions and goals for the new year. They thought about a resolution that is personal and one that is for school. Ask your child about their resolution! In math we spent some time learning about patterns! Students learned to identify the pattern unit and a variety of other types of patterns (i.e.: AB, ABB, ABC). Lastly, students made their own shape, color, and size patterns! Students also continued to work on their numbers to 20. We will continue with these numbers next week. In Mrs. Katan's hebrew class students started a winter unit where they are learning the hebrew names for winter clothing. We were happy to see so many of you at our kindergarten praying with parents! 1/18 Martin Luther King Holiday School Closed 1/19 Professional Development Day Student Free 1/25 Tu B'Shevat Camp Alonim Field Trip This week students listened to stories where the characters had high hopes of courage, faith, determination, and perseverance! They sang the song, High Hopes by Frank Sinatra. They also learned how the characters such as the little ant, the little engine, and the little owl all have high hopes! In math students learned about numbers 11-20 this week! They practiced writing these numbers, showing the number on a ten-frame, and using pictures to show the numbers.
