Our week started with a school Havdalah. A spiritual and sacred way to separate the Shabbat/weekend with the start of school. After Havdalah Room 12 children took a nature walk behind the Main Sanctuary. We collected sticks, big and small to use for our family tree project, as well as, a fun art activity. Tu'Bshvat is more than the New Year of the trees, we have been talking about respect for the environment and how we can help. The children are now beginning to recycle plates, cups and spoons, learning to separate the trash into different rubbish containers in the classroom.
Our classroom has added 3 new books about trees and planting. We now have a homemade rain stick, rocks books and an experiment with flowers with colored and clear water out for the children to observe. Our chicks are almost ready to hatch and you can feel the excitement in the air. Please check the live web cam, we may begin to hatch over the weekend. https://video.nest.com/live/YNMzxikwlC Tuesday, we had library, after 2 rained out trips to the library we finally made it there. Jordan's mom, a last-minute change, came with us and read 2 books that Jordan picked out. The children enjoyed hearing the stories and picking books themselves to look at afterwards. Wednesday, we began planting parsley in our classroom. We are going to observe the differences in how they grow in 4 different environments. We began with pre-formed Hydroponic Pods. The pods have been placed in a light controlled water garden and were given plant food mixed in with the water. We then put dirt and seeds into 2 pots. After watering them we placed one pot outside in the sun and the other pot in a dark closet. Our last pot was filled with sand and seeds after watering that we also placed it in the sun. The children draw their own hypothesis on what plants will grow the quickest and if light is needed for plant growth. Yes, they learnt the word, hypothesis, we will use it though out the rest of the year in all of our science experiments. Our class has formed a Breakfast Club. Each morning many of the children gather together at the snack table to eat breakfast, (for many it is a second breakfast), and chit chat about their families and what they did the previous day. It has become a highlight of our day to watch these gatherings and listen to the conversations. Thursday, was filled with a lot of fun and activity. We sang, we danced, we baked using fruits from trees, (Bananas, Dates and Chocolate-cocoa beans do grow on trees), and had time with Rabbi Sari. She talked with us about trees, nature, and respect all the things we have been discussing over the last 2 weeks. What a wonderful way to wrap up the work week. On to Friday and our day of rest. This week we welcomed Taylor's family to our Shabbat. We always love to show off our baking skills and classroom Shabbat services. This week we have decided to give our Tzedakah money collected to Jewish National Fund; we are planting a tree in Israel in honor of T'Bshvat from EC Wise Room 12. Maybe one day we will all have the opportunity to visit Israel and see the JNF forests and trees. Thank you Rabbi Yoshi for the donuts holes we enjoyed Friday afternoon. We are so happy to make you proud of all of us for our timely and orderly manner on Monday's Fire Drill. It was such a sweet treat we all earned.
