We had a short week, 3 days only, but chock full of excitement and fun. We started off the week with Blake's mom helping us to make Friendship Granola Bars. Around the table as we mixed all the ingredients together and mushed and squeezed with our clean washed hands, the children talked about friendship and mixing together all the ingredients in our Granola Bars. Sadly, we never got to taste the bars because teacher Fern and teacher Ren forgot to take them out of the oven in time. They got a little burnt. We will try again soon. After baking and cleaning up the room, we went on a small nature walk. Looking at the plants and trees. Examining if they have begun to bloom or are still asleep for the winter. This began our discussion on T'Bshvat; the New Year of the Trees. We spoke about respect for nature, what types of fruits and nuts we harvest from trees this time of year. The children learned about the first blossoms of the trees and that the flower arrives first before the fruits and nuts. Near the new Katz Pavillion we looked at Olive trees and learned about the trunk of the tree and our trunks that keep us standing up right. We spoke about the roots of the tree and our legs, helping to keep us balanced and how the roots help the plants to eat. Our little nature walk was cut short by the Fire Drill. We had prepared the children for the noise and showed them the emergency backpack in our room that we bring along with us. Of course, the class spoke about all the fund Band-Aids we keep in the backpack.
Along with our walk, play and baking, we have been hard at work refining the children's fine motor skills through lacing cards shaped like farm animals, tracing books and puzzles. It is special for us to see the growth in all the children. Their faces light up with such excitement and joy. Thursday, as always is a special day. Filled with song and story. We had Rabbi Sari tell us a story about taking in all the miracles around us. We should look to the sky and watch the clouds, look at the birds above and fish in the ocean. Giving us color and beauty. We should never take advantage of the earth and learn to appreciate all that it gives us each and every day. Andrew as always had us singing and dancing. We grew like trees and had shakers the shape of fruit. We also examined our chicken eggs and learned how to tell a fertilized egg with the formation of chick from a fertilized egg that has no growth. We explained the process in a child friendly way. Friday is the day of rest for our class. We bake and slow down the pace of class to bring in the feeling of Shabbat. Chloe's family joined us and gave us fun treats to make it a sweet and special Shabbat celebration. Please remember to send us in Family pictures. You can email to us and we will be happy to print them out. Reminder: Temple Gala is Saturday Night, February 3rd. Buy your tickets soon, before they sell out. Sign up to bring fruit for T'Bshvat. The sign-up is on-line. Thank you, Tanya, for all your help. Please No Popcorn in the lunch boxes. It is a choking hazard and we cannot have it.
