Dear Room 13 Families, We began our week with a beautiful school wide Havdalah service. We sat together as Jen played the guitar and led us in the blessings. The children watched as the colorful twisted candle burned and smelled the spices to remind them of the sweet smell of Shabbat. Throughout our week, we continued the conversation on the holiday of Tu B’Shvat. We read books about trees, sang songs about trees and did art work with parts of trees. The children listened carefully as we read the story of “The Giving Tree” in both Hebrew and English. They saw the books, side by side, and heard the words of the story, page by page, being read in Hebrew and then in English. They loved seeing that the book was exactly the same, just in different languages. We discussed all that trees have to give us, and yet, what we can also give back to the trees. We saw many fun songs about this wonderful holiday of the trees. The children learned all about the Shkediyah (almond tree) and how it is blooming in Israel right now, full of beautiful pink flowers. We sang a song all about how special this tree is. We have also been singing “If I were a tree,” a song teaching us all the parts of the tree! As we mentioned last week, the children continued creating their portraits out of the natural materials that we collected on our nature walk around our campus. They thought carefully as they chose from different color/size/shaped leaves, rocks, sticks or flower buds all to represent their own facial features. The children often looked into the mirror to make sure they were not forgetting anything important. Please come by and take a look in our Art Center at these amazing masterpieces. Throughout the rest of our week, we had a wonderful time exploring new materials on the light table and new books in our class Library. We want to give a big thank you to Claudia and Sienna for reading to us in the Library this week. On Thursday, we heard a wonderful story from Rabbi Sari about how what trees give us and more importantly what we can give the trees. In her story, the girl ended up giving the tree a blessing of thanks and a big hug! We also had the joy of singing songs with Andrew and studying our colors, through music, with the giant parachute that he brought for us! We then ended our week with a beautiful Shabbat with Avery and her family!
