Dear Room 13 Families, This week, we began our week in such a special way, with an age group and All School Tu BiShvat celebration. We began our morning by gathering together with the rest of the Explorer classes. We discussed the importance of the holiday of Tu BiShvat and reminded ourselves of the traditions of planting and tasting the seven species (the foods discussed in the Torah that the land of Israel will be filled with). We then had the wonderful opportunity to plant our very own parsley seeds; learning that this is another Tu BiShvat tradition, one plants parsley on Tu BiShvat and it should be ready to harvest for your Passover seder. Once our seeds were planted, we moved into the next room for a delicious food tasting. The children enjoyed tasting each of the seven species (wheat, barley, pomegranates, olives, figs, dates and grapes) along with other fruits that come from trees (dried apricots, fresh apples and dried apples). After our amazing age group celebration and some time on the yard, we moved over to Plotkin to celebrate together as a school. Jen led us in a Tu BiShvat sing-along and then we had the joy of helping to plant a myrtle tree out behind the sanctuary. It was so exciting getting to help scoop the dirt and know that this would grow into a large tree that we could maybe even use on Sukkot as a branch of our Lulav! It was truly a wonderful, joyous holiday celebration! Even with Tu BiShvat behind us, our love, excitement and curiosity of planting still continues. On Wednesday, the children entered the room to see lima beans, ziplock bags, cotton balls and water on the table. We discussed that we would be using these materials and only these materials to plant our beans. The children mentioned that we needed to add dirt and sun light to help the beans grow. We told them we were going to see if these beans could grow without dirt and, as for the sunlight, they would chose if they wanted their beans on the window in the light or hung in our Light Room turned Green House. We then asked the children to draw their own hypotheses. We are looking forward to seeing if anything grows in the sun, the dark, not at all or very large. In the same day, we also planted corn kernels in a bowl of Oorbeez (small balls of water). With the same thought in mind, we are planting them without dirt and have one bowl in the sunlight and one in our Green House. We are anxiously awaiting any growth or change from this experiment as well! Throughout the rest of our week, we sang tree songs, read many wonderful books, built letters out of sticks and counted Lima beans. We greatly enjoyed our time with Rabbi Sari, hearing a wonderful story about Moses leading the Israelites through the dessert. The story focused on the importance of teamwork. We then came back to our classroom to sing and dance with Andrew, our music teacher. We ended our week with a beautiful Shabbat celebration with Ashton and his family. We had the joy of not only celebrating Shabbat, but also coming together as a community to celebrate Ashton’s birthday. It was a wonderful end to an amazing week!
