Dear Room 13 Families,
This week has flown by; guess we were just having too much fun! We began our week with our first Explorers Havdalah. All four classes gathered together in Room 10 to say goodbye to Shabbat and welcome in the new week. Together we smelled the spices, watched as shadows formed on our hands from the light of the candle and listened as the candle was extinguished into the Kiddush cup. It was a beautiful way to enter our week together. To begin our week with something sweet, we decided to bake a delicious pumpkin bread. The children helped to measure, pour and stir. As the bread baked, the children smelled the wonderful scent that filled our room and, finally, after lunch it was time to taste their special treat! With the excitement of last week’s science experience, we thought to perform a science experiment as a class. Continuing with our harvest vegetables, our science experiment happened with a pumpkin. Together at circle time, we began by studying the materials and ingredients we would be using; a pumpkin, baking soda, vinegar and a bowl. After we cut the pumpkin open, we decided to do our experiment twice, once with the seeds in and once after taking them out. Before adding our ingredients into the pumpkin, we each formed our own hypotheses. Some children thought it would make the insides change color, some thought it would shoot up to the sky and others thought it would form a rainbow. Finally it was time! We first poured in the baking soda, and as the excitement grew, we then poured in the vinegar. To the children’s surprise, the liquid began bubbling up and poured out over the side of the pumpkin. With thunderous wows, the children began saying, “Again, again!” While taking out the pumpkin seeds, we introduced the word reaction; teaching the children that when we mix ingredients and something changes or occurs, this is a reaction. Finally it was time to do it again. We asked the children if they thought it would be the same or different since the seeds were taken out. Some children thought yes and others no. As we began to pour in the ingredients, again, the excitement filled the room. The children watched in wonder when, again, the liquid bubbled and spilled over the sides of the pumpkin! With the thrill and clear love of science experiments, we thought to bring it to the Art Center. When the children arrived in the morning they found pallets set up with only red, yellow, blue and white. As they asked for more and different colors, they were challenged to see if they could create their own colors with what they were given. They excitement was, again, in the air as each new color was formed! Many of the children couldn’t believe that they were able to create their very own colors from just the 4 they were given. With a class full of collectors, we noticed a quickly growing collection of pine cones. One morning, as the children entered the room, they noticed on the Art table pine cones, paint and glitter. They quickly became excited about which pine cones they had each collected and were just as excited to begin decorating them. Over the next few days, the children added more twigs and small nature treasures onto their beautiful creations. We also had the joy of visiting the School Library this week. We want to give a big thank you to Evan and his mom Tiffany and Jacob and his mom Jessica for reading to us in the Library. We ended our week by spending a beautiful Shabbat together. The children made and ate challah, said the blessings together and sang songs with Ditza in the Sanctuary. We hope you all have a wonderful weekend and look forward to seeing you on Monday.
