Dear Room 13 Families,
Wow, what a week! It may have been short, but was definitely full of fun, learning, joy and excitement. We began our week discussing the exciting, upcoming holiday of Tu B’Shvat. We learned all about the holiday as it celebrates the New Year of the trees. We discussed the importance of trees in our world, to our school and to each of us. The children shared numerous items that they know to be made from trees, such as our tables, paper towels and even toilet paper. We began a discussion on why we then should not waste these and other items created by trees. After our discussion, the children were very excited to celebrate the nature we are so lucky to learn in. Before we took our walk, we discussed the importance of being respectful to nature and what that means to us. We talked about not picking things that are still living and growing and even being careful of where we walk, so to not hurt growing flowers or plants. We then took a beautiful walk around our campus, stopping to observe the trees; noticing some have leaves and even flowers while others do not and some have soft, flaky bark while other have hard bumpy bark. The children noticed that not only where the leaves different colors on different trees, but also different shapes and sizes. We stopped to collect sticks, leaves, flowers and other natural items that we found on the ground. The children could not wait to sort through what they had found when we returned back to the classroom. The next morning the children entered the room to find many of their collected materials displayed at the Art Center. As we continue our journey with self-portraits, the children had the opportunity to now create themselves with these new natural materials. You will be able to see these beautiful creations as the children work on them over the next week. On Thursday, we had the wonderful opportunity to hear a story about this week’s Torah portion from Rabbi Sari, who will be with us while Rabbi Josh is at home with his new baby girl. We also had a great time learning new songs with Andrew, our Music teacher. We then ended our week with a beautiful Shabbat celebration with Ezekiel and his family.
