Dear Room 13 Families,
Wow! We can’t believe how quickly our first two weeks of school have flown by. It has been so wonderful getting to know you and your children. We spent last week focusing on the beauty of new beginnings. We spent time getting to know your children, giving them time to explore their new environment and helping them get to know the children in our class. We discussed how we are now forming a new Room 13 community. We ended our week with our first beautiful Shabbat together as a class. Each child also made their very own challah (made with dough that the children prepared on Thursday) and Shabbat candlesticks to bring from school to home to use during their family celebrations and to celebrate our first Shabbat of the year. We began our week, in our classroom, with a beautiful Havdalah service. As a class, we said goodbye to Shabbat and welcomed in the new week. We sang the blessings together and smelled the spices as they were passed around the room. The children watched the flame burn and listened closely as it was extinguished in the Kiddush cup. It was truly a beautiful way to begin our week together, as it will be each week, throughout our year. After Havdalah, we began discussing circles and things that go round. The children found circles all throughout our classroom and we painted circles using cups and paint. We then explained why at this time of year, we have circles on our mind. We discussed that soon we will be celebrating the holiday of Rosh HaShannah, the Jewish New Year. We discussed how just like a circle goes round, our Jewish calendar does as well, starting over each year. We looked at different circular symbols that we often see during this holiday time, such as apples, pomegranates and even a round challah. The children had the opportunity to taste the seeds of a pomegranate and different kinds of apples. We did this after observing and hypothesizing about what might be hiding inside each fruit. The children were excited to see how many seeds were within the pomegranate and couldn’t believe there is actually a star hiding inside of an apple! Throughout our week, we also greatly enjoyed our time with Andrew, our music teacher. Each day, the children love sharing snack time together, trying new foods and socializing with their new classmates. They especially enjoyed tasting apples dipped in honey! On Friday, together we baked fresh round challah, with honey drizzled on top for a sweet, new year that lies ahead. We ended our week by celebrating a beautiful Shabbat with Cameron and his family.
