Dear Room 13 Families,
We began our exciting, fun-filled week with a beautiful All School Havdalah service. We joined all the children in Plotkin, while Jen led us in the blessings as we said goodbye to Shabbat and welcomed in our new week. As we made our way back to our classroom, we informed the children that we would be having many guests come visit our room! Everyone was so excited to see what was in store. As we returned to our classroom, all of the Explorer children joined us for a very special Purim Puppet Show. With our beautiful Palace of Shushan as our background, we introduced the children to our Purim puppet characters, while explaining that the children in Room 13 actually created the puppets being used. The children listened intently and helped fill in parts of the Purim story and most importantly, filled the room with noise when we mentioned Haman’s name! Throughout the telling of the story, we discussed how the characters felt in certain situations they were in and how we might have felt as well; our friends not listening to our words, being told to bow down and needing to hide that we are Jewish. We talked about how now, we can be full of pride, enthusiasm and joy to tell whoever we want that we are Jewish and do not need to hide it or be scared like Esther and the Jews of Shushan. Throughout the week, we sang Purim songs and read a number of wonderful Purim themed books; Sammy Spiders First Purim, Purim, The Purim Surprise and continued the book, Courage. We read a wonderful book, A Costume for Noah, about a little boy who can’t decide on his Purim costume, while also waiting for his baby brother to be born. In the end, his costume is that of a big brother. We also read, Is It Purim Yet, a great story explaining a number of the traditions revolving around the holiday of Purim. As we read the story, we paused on each of them, realizing how exciting it was that we had/would be doing the same traditions that the book was explaining. A new wonderful Purim story we read was called The Purim Superhero; a story about a little boy whose friends are all dressing up as superheroes, however he loves aliens. With the help, support and creativity of his family he creates his very own costume, Super Alien! We will revisit this story and the values within over the next few weeks. Throughout our week, the children had the opportunity to complete their masks! They worked thoughtfully, taking the time to add the last details to their very special creations. If you have not yet seen your child’s mask, they are on display within our classroom. As we continued discussing the story of Purim and the evil character of Haman, we discussed that he was such an evil person that we don’t even want to hear his name during the telling of the story. With this thought in mind, we began creating special noise makers known as Groggers or Raashan. Our children used all of their amazing fine motor skills to first fill small eggs with small beads, then cover the egg with two spoons, wrap tape around the whole thing and finally decorate it with decorative tape and sticky jewels. We are so excited to use our groggers next week during the telling of the story. We then enjoyed a beautiful Shabbat service and celebration. We had the pleasure of celebrating with our Room 13 community. Shabbat Shalom, Hannah and Chen Reminders: *Please remember to sign your child in and out, with a legible signature, EVERY day.
