This week was full of exploration as we celebrated Tu B’Shevat in so many ways. We began the week tasting the seven species of fruits as well as many other options, making comparisons with the children and expanding on their descriptive vocabulary. The children planted parsley and learned about taking care of plants from Bam next door, the intention with choosing the parsley that it will be ready to harvest for Passover. The entire early childhood gathered in temple to sing Tu B’Shevat songs led by Jen and Andrew, say the shehecheyanu, and outside of the temple, we planted a tree with an arborist. The children have expressed a strong interest in nature, and we are supporting this through nature walks, collecting of sticks as a group, and drawing trees while outside looking at the tree itself. Being immersed in the environment is so important in having a true experience in nature, and what better example to draw a tree from than a real tree in front of you? Keeping with our theme of nature, we have directed some of the conversations had at the tables and during group time around taking care of our world and recycling. The children have been peeling broken crayons that would otherwise go unused, sorting the paper from the clean crayons, and are saving them for a future project where we recycle these broken crayons by melting them into new crayons. The peeling of the crayons strengthens their fine motor skills and sorting the parts of the crayons requires attentiveness and organization. Reminders:
