Hello Room 14 Parents,
This week we explored Rosh Hashanah through music, art, story and play. We visited Andrew, the music teacher, and sang songs about the upcoming holiday involving the Rosh Hashana symbols and their meanings, the sweetness of the apple and honey and how we hope for a sweet new year. The children drew apples that incorporated shapes, the circle for the apple and the line for the stem. These are pre-writing skills that we will continue to build upon throughout the year. During circle time, we discussed the meaning of the Hebrew words “Rosh” and “Hashanah” separately and how they relate to what the holiday is about: the start of the new year. The children collaboratively made apple bread that we enjoyed for snack earlier this week. We reviewed some of the science behind cooking, discussed why we use the ingredients that we do, reviewed our five senses and worked on descriptive vocabulary for the things that they smelled and tasted. Thank you for bringing in apples and various apple products for the children to explore during their apple tasting. We again reviewed descriptive vocabulary and worked on comparisons between the different types of apples. While on the new yard, children in the sandbox were making a Rosh Hashanah cake out of sand that had apples, applesauce, cinnamon and honey. It was so wonderful to see them incorporating our classroom discussions and small group activities into outdoor play. Rabbi Josh also came to visit our class and did a puppet show discussing how we treat one another and how Judaism emphasizes helping others and giving respect. Reminders: There is a half day next Wednesday, September 20th at 12pm and there is no school on Thursday, the 21st and Friday, the 22nd in observance of Rosh Hashana. On Wednesday, please send your child in white as we will be having a Rosh Hashanah service. Shabbat Shalom, Room 14 Teachers
