This week we dedicated our time to a question Liam brought up a few weeks ago: “Why is the lion the king of animals if the elephant is the biggest?” The children all agreed that the lion is the king of animals. We asked if they believed that the lion should be the king or if they would nominate another animal and why. James: Humans should be the kings of animals because lions prey on tiger cubs and people are nicer than lions. Julian: Elephants should be the kings of animals because they’re the biggest. Phoenix F: Elephants breath through their trunk. Lions are beasts. Chloe: A lion should be the king. Phoenix K: A lion should be the king since it has way more qualities. We concluded that group activity with a story about the king of animals who disappears, and all animals gather an assembly to find a successor. The animals who want to replace it present they’re special skills they claim a king needs: Cheetah - fastest; Peacock - prettiest; Octopus - most efficient; Owl - wisest, etc. The animal chosen at the end of the story is a perfect animal that combines all traits together. We will continue this topic in class and carry out some research to try to answer Liam’s question definitively. A special event we held this week was Generations Day. During the week we talked about how lucky we were to have loving and supporting families and money to buy things. The children talked about what they’re fortunate to afford: toys, food, a house… We discussed how not everyone is as fortunate as we are, and the children suggested we share food and money with people of fewer means. Dean added that we can share some of our money but not everything or we would have nothing left. On Friday every child brought a guest to class and introduced the class and classmates to them. Together with the special guests, we made bags with toiletries to donate them to people who are less fortunate. It was wonderful to see the children working together with the guests and the care with which they made the bags. Shabbat shalom everyone!
