Dear Parents,
We started off the week with a very wet day! Taking advantage of the weather, the children got to witness a memorable weather moment when it started to hail. It's so important to take these times and be able to turn them into teachable moments. As they stood under their umbrellas and watched the pieces of hail fall, they were able to touch them and experience it first hand. As we continue to talk about Tu B’Shevat, we thought it would be a great opportunity to discuss where paper comes from and how to care for and handle our classroom books. We discussed how fortunate we are to have books in our classroom and that we noticed that some of the pages are being torn. We discussed with the children all that goes into making a book. From the author to illustrator, and the paper that we receive from trees. They became aware how truly treasured one book could be. They experienced ways to hold a book, and how to turn the pages and care for it. Developing a respect for books will create a pathway for respect in general. As an activity, we thought it would be beneficial for the children to make their own books, talk about them, and then have them displayed in our classroom Library. This will be an ongoing process, as the children love books, enjoy story time, and as time goes by, they will understand the care needed that goes into making them. As parents, you can always help reinforce the ideas when you are reading at home or elsewhere. On Tuesday, we were fortunate to have two moms, Layne and Tatiana, join us in the Library and read books with such emotion and character. It made for a memorable experience after discussing the care of books. On Wednesday the children experimented with the planting of dried Indian corn. As the corn can be multi-colored and decorative, they can also be a foundation for a fun Science experiment. The kernels on the ears of corn are the seeds from which the corn plant grows. What would happen if you could plant these seeds? Could you get a plant to grow from the dried out kernels? We planted the corn in both soil and water, and the children are eager to see which grows faster. Let's find out! The children enjoyed music with Teacher Andrew and sang and danced around, it's a time they look forward to. We ended the week with Shabbat, celebrated with all. We thank the Melamed family for joining us and making the day more memorable. Shabbat Shalom, Bam & Lindsay REMINDERS: Jan 30th- Picture day at 9:45am Feb 3rd- Shabbat Family- Leonardo Lavi
