Dear Parents,
This week we focused our discussions and learning around the holiday of Tu B’Shevat. During circle time, we talked about the different parts of a tree (roots, trunk, branches, leaves) and what a tree gives us. We have had many wonderful interactive discussions revolving around trees, what they need to grow, how they help us every day and the different types of delicious fruits we get from them. We took a look around our classroom to see what we use on a daily basis that we would not be fortunate to have without trees. A big lesson that we continue to learn is how not to be wasteful. We (teachers) started to notice paper towels on the bathroom floor, children using multiple pieces of paper towels at a time, wanting to use multiple bowls and plates instead of just one and scribbling on a piece of paper quickly and then wanting another one immediately after. It is very important to us that we instill the value and importance of not being wasteful and appreciating our environment. We are encouraging the children to take their time and use materials purposefully. Your children worked on their fine motor and creativity skills using different mediums to draw and create their own interpretation of a tree. We placed two plants and a drawing of a tree on a table and your children were encouraged to draw their own interpretation of what they saw. This revolves around the concept of still art. “The magic of still life paintings (and drawings) is that they can show us a new way of looking at the ordinary objects around us. Once they are placed into a specific arrangement and then captured in paint, ink, pastel, or any other medium- the objects take on a whole new meaning. They are imbued with a life beyond the ordinary. Their existence becomes recorded in time.” Stay tuned for more about our exploration with process art using loose materials and still art. This week and the weeks to follow, we will be combining music with our friends from room 14. We sang, danced and had a wonderful music experience with Andrew. On Thursday, our time spent with Rabbi Sari and our friends from room 13 was another wonderful experience. She talked about Tu B’Shevat through an interactive story. It was so rewarding to watch your children become engaged and mesmerized while she spoke. Congratulations to Ben on becoming a big brother again and to the Heyman family on welcoming their beautiful daughter, Emilia Clair. Thank you to Amanda and her family for spending Shabbat with us. Shabbat Shalom and have a great weekend!
