Dear Parents,
As we continue to discuss Thanksgiving and what the children have to be thankful for, we remind them that it's not just tangible things, but also who they have in their lives and everyone around them. On Thursday, we enjoyed time with Rabbi Josh and baked yummy Pumpkin pie and bread. If you haven't yet seen, please come and take a look at our new classroom center, "Mindfulness." This is a calming area to teach the children self-regulation and how to remain in the moment throughout the day. We have established this center where the children can go to re-center, calm down, or just relax. The basic idea is that it will help diffuse situations before they escalate, and it will allow the children both space and time to gather their thoughts. Children can get overwhelmed by big emotions in their tiny bodies, whether it's frustration, anger or sadness, and this area provides an appropriate outlet for them. As we get started, the children will have several different things to do. From sensory tactile objects that require focus and attention to rocks and sand for calming and headphones to get some quiet time, all this will provide a release of energy where the children can separate and recharge. The goal is to help them learn how to regulate their emotions and settle their mind and body. Last week the children drew pictures of themselves as they looked in the mirror. When doing so, we asked several questions. What shape are your eyes? Do you have long hair or short? This week, they created self-portraits using a mixed variety of materials. From metal, cork, wood, and wire, they picked the materials that represented the shapes of their eyes, nose, ears, and mouth, some even added earrings for an extra touch. This activity prompted self-reflection, and allowed them much room for creativity. We have so much planned for the weeks ahead, your little Explorers are going to be very busy! We ended the week celebrating Shabbat and coming together to reflect on our week. We thank the Lando family for joining us and for making the day more memorable.
