Dear Parents, The children have been very busy in the classroom. They began their journals which will document the school year through their eyes. The children's journals begin with the entry, "My First Day of Pre-K." From there, it will include holidays, personal experiences, occurrences, reflections, and it will end with, "My Last Day of School." Journaling work takes place after the children finish a class project or when we're discussing a certain topic. After discussing the journal topic for the day in a large group setting, the children then work in small groups to complete their journal entry. During this time, the children first visually recall the information they have retained about the subject matter by drawing a picture. Then, through dictation, the children orally recall the same information and we transcribe their words to their drawing. Journal writing with children serves many purposes. It teaches children that their thoughts, feelings, and words can be transferred onto paper for others to see and read. There are many skills that are practiced through journaling:
This week the children explored different Shofars we have in the classroom. With magnifying glasses, they closely looked at them and discovered the different colors and details each one had. Then, using Plastalina modeling clay, the children sculpted Shofars and added their own special touches. Clay is very versatile and as the children rolled, patted, and squeezed it, they were able to mold it into the shape of a Shofar. Through this manipulation, the children strengthened their hand and eye coordination and their small muscles in their fingers and hands. Using clay promotes their minds to get busy by thinking about what they're going to create and how they're going to create it. This creative activity promotes imaginative problem-solving skills. We ended the week visiting the Music Lab with Maestro, seeing Rabbi Josh, and celebrating Shabbat and hearing the sounds of the Shofar. Thank you to the Shabbouei family for joining us and making the day more memorable. Shabbat Shalom, Lindsay and Vera REMINDERS: Oct 5th- NO SCHOOL- Sukkot Oct 6th- NO SCHOOL- Professional Development Day
