The children have been busy learning to play board games and learning the rules to the different games. The children are learning to wait their turns and be good sports. The latter is a little more difficult lesson to learn, especially when we want to boast that we have won. Playing board games with your children is one of the best gifts you can give to them.
In PE this week, we learned a new game called SCAT. It is helping us with our gross motor skills, running, jumping, hopping, galloping and a lot more. The game also helps with our eye hand coordination, we must roll the ball toward a friend and try to tag them. Finally, it is helping us with our letter recognition and sounds. We must recognize the sounds of the letters in SCAT. PE is more than playing in the gym. The children have begun to remember to sign in every morning. There skills are improving every day. Over break, take out the crayons, markers, pencil, paper, scissors and glue. Free Art is a great activity to keep your children active and happy. You have many budding artists in your homes. Music was filled with the sound of bells. The children put together 2 songs using hand bells and Maestro conducted the room 2 Bell Orchestra. They also learned musical terms for loud, soft, gradually increase the sound, (Crescendo) and a decrease in sound, (Decrescendo). Who knows, you may have budding musicians too. Of course, what would a week be like if we didn’t cook or bake in room 2. There were a lot of bananas left from the Farmers Market and we took advantage of a few by baking a mini-chocolate chip banana bread. If we must toot our own horns, it was the best banana bread ever. We spoke a lot about measurements and chemical reactions when mixing ingredients such as baking soda and baking powder. We even took the time to taste the baking soda and mix it into water causing the water to bubble similar to soda. We have also been doing work on our attention to details and finding words to describe things. We are trying to expand our vocabulary and use our senses to add meaning to our experiences. While making the banana bread, we used words such as thicker, thinner, heavier, darker and creamy to describe the batter as we added the ingredients. We also found out that if you do something repeatedly, over time, that the tracks in your brain become deeper with those memories, and sometimes you can recall a recipe without reading it. Teacher Fern makes this banana bread so often that she knows the recipe in her head. We didn’t need to read it, but we did need to follow the rules of baking by making sure we had all the correct ingredients and measurements so the bread will rise and taste yummy. We have a few sweet tooth’s in our class, and we decided to fill them up just a little. Details, words that describe things and voting became an eating project for us. Do you know that Oreos come in over 15 different flavors? Room 2 knew that and if we had the time and a lot of tooth brushes, we are sure that they would have tried them all. But we just picked 6 and tasted ¼ of each cookie. We talked about the taste, texture, likes and dislikes. Then we put it to a vote. The winner is Mint Oreo, followed by Winter, Chocolate Golden, Fudge and Birthday cake in that order. We left out traditional Oreos from the taste testing. Look for our Line Graph and descriptions/details after winter break. It was a difficult task to decide what was our favorite and we didn’t all agree. It was a hard job, but room 2 rose to the challenge. Shabbat was filled with fun this week. Thank you all for sending in special treats, so we could celebrate together before winter break. The children had a great time and the teachers appreciated all of it. We wish you a very Happy New Year and a safe Winter Break. Ren and Fern Reminders: School Resumes on January 7th Martin Luther King Jr. Observance January 21st , school will be closed.
