This week we revisited the letter “Pp” and introduced the letter “Gg”. We played our clue game with both letters. We thought this would be challenging, but instead it was a breeze. The children enjoyed guessing for both letters and making the sound for both. They listened to the jingles for both letters and learned how to form them using the wooden big lines and little lines. We read aloud books that had words with the letter “Pp” and “Gg” at the beginning. The children made their new pages for the new letters.
As usual, the children enjoyed learning and singing the Jolly Jingle for each of the letters, as well as discovering the zoo phonics movement to add to the sound. When we played the beginning sound guessing game for the letter Pp the children were able to guess panda, piano, and planet based on the clues given, but really struggled with the word porpoise. After being told about the porpoise, we were able to compare porpoises with dolphin's and note their similarities and differences. Comments included: “The dolphin has a long nose, but the porpoise does not.” “The porpoise looks like Shamu.” “A porpoise looks more like a whale.” “Are they in the same family?” The children had an easier time with the clues for the letter Gg, even surprising us with knowing glacier! On Wednesday the Launchers participated in another lesson from the USC Bridge Curriculum. This lesson was entitled Letter “Talk”. Letters and Terms included: Ff-facts and feel, Ww-what and why, Dd-describe and discuss, Ss-sort and speak, Pp-part and piece, Aa-ask and answer. The children were active participants when discussing what they knew about each vocabulary term, some comments were: “To feel means to touch something.” “What is always a question.” “Why Means-Why did you do that?” “To speak is to talk.” “You can sort lots of things.” “You ask when you don’t know.” After discussing the vocabulary terms, the children played a touching sensory game. They pulled a picture card and had to reach in a box and feel for the item that matched the card. Once they did, they needed to describe how the item felt. They really enjoyed this game! We then progressed to sorting through a tray of items. These were in two categories, things you can build with and toys. Children were told they needed to use the letter terms and work with others to sort these items. The first attempt found them just working alone, so we reminded them they needed to speak to each other, and the second attempt went better. However, it took three attempts and teacher guidance to help them successfully sort them using the letter terms. Once the items were sorted the children were paired up and allowed to create something using both the building items and the toys. Once again, they were asked to use the letter terms to communicate with their partner what was to be built. Creations included a garage, a castle/house, and a farm. Getting ready for Generation’s Day, we enjoyed having the children bring in an assortment of toiletries. They came in and let everyone know what they brought and how they felt good about bringing these items in for people who don’t have these items. We overheard the children talking about how lucky they are that they just have them already in their homes and don’t have to think about it. They discussed how they feel lucky they have parents that can take them to the store to buy these items not just for them, but now people that are in need too. We decorated bags to sort these items in. The children were asked to draw detailed pictures of them helping other people. They spent time showing in detail that they were giving not only items but love. Shabbat Shalom, Rachel and Linda Reminders: -Shabbat family Friday, March 6th, Anja.
