The weather has been unbearably hot this week, so we have really been taking advantage of the cooler temperature earlier in the morning and taking our learning outside.
Outdoor play spaces can stimulate children’s imaginations and engage their sense of curiosity as they explore their physical surroundings and learn in ways beyond what they can experience indoors. The play that occurs outdoors uniquely contributes to learning in young children. Painting at the table and easel, building, coloring with chalk and getting the dirt ready for planting and gardening are just a few of the activities that took place for the children this week. During music with Andrew, he introduced a new instrument, the xylophone. The children loved the sounds they were able to make while tapping on the xylophone with their mallets. At this age the children learn about keeping a steady beat and making coordinated movements — skills that are critical to math and reading later on. While inside, many of the children enjoyed painting on burlap rather than paper. Many of the children also really enjoyed creating various buildings with our wooden blocks while others created amazing race tracks for our cars. We had a lovely Shabbat this Friday baking challah and reciting the blessing in class. While in Temple the children enjoyed singing along with Ditza as she played her guitar. All of the children also did and amazing job of standing together under the Talis as Rabbi Josh came around to give them their blessings, then they enjoyed the story he told.
