This week we have officially begun learning and preparing for the important celebration of Tu B’Shevat, honoring the trees. Tu B’ Shevat is a wonderful opportunity to stress the importance of environmental preservation as well as Tikkun Olam, repairing the world. This allows children to develop a natural curiosity and appreciation for nature and all its wonders. In order to tie in our study of the ocean to learning about Tu B’Shevat during circle time we started talking about some of the important things trees do for us and give to us, as well as the differences between tress on land and tress in the ocean. We read The Giving Tree, a classic story that talks about all the selfless and countless things trees provide people. We also read Oceans by Percious McKenzie, that describes what types of animals and plants rely on the ocean and gave the children many new vocabulary words. After reading this book the children wanted to make jellyfish, so they used different types of materials to create their own. They are now swimming in our ocean.
Due to the rain this week we spent a lot of time inside with our friends from room 22. In small groups all the children helped to juice tangerines to make juice which we shared for snack on Tuesday. On Thursday the children also helped to make snack by smashing up avocados to make guacamole. Both things were delicious. If you have any fruit trees at home please bring some in so we can learn about and taste them for Tu B’Shevat.
