It has been another Purim fun filled week here in Room 23. The children were so busy dressing up and pretending to be Queen Esther, King Ahashverosh and Haman. They all looked so amazing in their costumes. Our focus was on groggers this week. We talked about why we have them on Purim and listened to the many different sounds that different types of groggers make. Everyone made their own to use during the Purim story and at Temple next week . Some children made other creations with water colors, markers, glue and glitter that will be hung in the Kingdom of Shushan. This week was another week full of Purim fun. We also had fun learning about hamantashen, and how to make and bake them. The children had an opportunity to make chocolate hamantashen for a Purim snack. Not only are children interested in what goes on in the kitchen, there are many benefits from getting involved. Math skills are an important in any cooking process. Such as when doubling a recipe it requires addition (or multiplication) skills, halving it requires division, and recipe fractions like 1/2 cup and 3/4 teaspoon bring math applications into the classroom. Cooking allows kids to get instant feedback, which helps them learn and grow in self-knowledge. A relaxed atmosphere in the classroom offers an opportunity to talk, and express themselves verbally. Last but not least, cooking is fun! Having fun with your child in the kitchen builds positive memories, good vibes, and good food. Next week we will continue with Purim and end the week with a special dress-up Shabbat. Hope to see you at the Purim Carnival this Sunday!
