This week, we turned our focus towards our next holiday, Tu B'Shevat. Tu B'Shevat is called the birthday of the trees, so we celebrated by learning about trees and all of the things they give us. Our activities this week included cutting fruit to make a fruit salad (thank you to Sarah for your help), baking an apple crisp, and planting flowers into individual pots (thank you to Molly for the materials and help!). We discussed how trees give us different fruits and how plants give us flowers.
The rain we experienced this week led to many interesting conversations. We talked about who liked the rain and who didn't, and why. Charlotte said that she likes the rain because it feeds the thirsty plants. Liam learned that when a seed goes into soil, it grows into a tree. Another new activity we explored this week was building with cardboard boxes. The magna-tiles on the light table is one of the most popular activities in our classroom, so we wanted to build upon that interest. We have been collecting cardboard boxes and even painted some of them ourselves. This week we built with these larger items and saw how tall we could build, how we could make a tunnel, and how to knock it all down. This exploration introduces the concept of balance, because the children have to understand how to best stack the boxes and how to place a longer box and connect two towers to make a bridge. It also feeds the imagination, showing how children can have the most fun with the simplest materials. Thank you so much to our first Shabbat family, the Samimi/Talei family! We had such a special day celebrating Shabbat and Vivi's early birthday. We can't wait to have all of our families here for Shabbat. Shabbat Shalom and have a wonderful weekend!
