Welcome back! What an incredible week we've had. It was delightful seeing all our friends (and their mommies). The children easily got back into their routine and were so happy to be back at school. Our friends in Room 25 have grown so much and we are noticing friendships blooming. While the children are playing together outdoors and in the classroom, they are working things out with less teacher involvement. They are working hard to make good choices and be good friends to one another.
On Monday, we did an outside set up with cash registers on a table. After spending some time playing, some of the children said, "We need money in our cash registers." On Tuesday, we put cash registers and money out on the table again and, after playing for awhile, the children asked, "What can we buy with money?" So we went inside the class and put some pretend fruits, vegetables, and pizza in a basket. One thing led to another, and on their own, the children starting playing store. Some friends were selling ice cream, while other friends were buying ice cream. Some ordered vanilla with rainbow sprinkles and other friends wanted chocolate sprinkles. They recognized that in order to get something at the store - money is needed. This is a wonderful example of the way our everyday setups in the classroom focus on being responsive to the children's interests in order to create meaningful learning experiences. It was fun and there was so much learning going on! This week we also started talking about Yom Ha'atzmaut, Israel's birthday! We have been counting in Hebrew and also singing happy birthday to Israel in Hebrew. Next week we will make a birthday cake and flags in honor of Israel's 69th birthday!
