What a fun week we had in Room 3. We started off by joining the rest of the EC for an all school Havdalah. We sang songs and said the prayers. It is so nice to see the children in Room 9 singing loudly and saying the prayers for Havdalah. On the walk back to class, we overheard the children talking about the prayers and how delicious the spices smelled and how big the flame was from the candle.
We came back and with a few moms we made the dough for Hamantashen. It was fun to measure out the ingredients, crack the eggs and sift the flour. The children loved mixing the ingredients and taking turns helping out. The next day we rolled out the dough and shaped each cookie into a triangle like Haman’s hat. We had fun cutting them into circles and transforming them into triangles with yummy filling inside. We got pretty messy during the process and the children enjoyed taking part in each step of the process. We think their favorite part was having a taste at the end of the day. We gave them each a bag of 3 to take home to share with their families. This started a discussion about math and how we decided how many each child got to take home. Some said, “If I only take 3 home, how can I share with my family of 4 people?” “I have 5 people in my family, I guess we all get to take a few bites since there is not enough for each of us to have one whole one.” “I need one more because there are 4 people in my family.” After doing the math and dividing the number of Hamantashen we had and how many children were in the classroom, we decided they got to eat one now, and take the rest home. After having discussed that some people in their families would not get a whole one, we asked them how many people were in their immediate family. We did some addition as well as skip counting by 5s, 4s and then did some harder addition. The children were very interested in the math concepts as well as the actual help with addition. We got to hear an amazing Purim story from Hannah. She brought in figures of superheroes and Disney characters. She told the same story the children had heard us tell last week, but she used Disney characters to tell the story this time. Some children said, “Esther was brave when she told the king she was Jewish.” “Uncle Modechi/Superman was kind and a good uncle to Esther.” “King Ahashverosh/Prince Hanz was worried.” “Haman/Hulk was not nice at all and a bad guy.” “Vashti/Ana was a bit shy.” We talked about the character traits of each character in the Purim story. One child said Esther was scared because of what Haman was going to do. Some other things that were said were: “Haman was a helper.” We had the children write the words under each character on the board. They all wanted a turn to write words! We continued this discussion after having a conversation with them about traits we all have. We named some qualities and traits we have and compared ourselves to the characters of the story as well. The small group that is working on the Ice Cream Station was very busy this week. The next step on the list was to make decorations. They decided last week that they wanted to make paper chains and rubber band decorations. They cut long strips and then ripped tape to close the chain. They were having a lot of fun and putting their work together as a group. It was nice to see how they problem solved and worked together to figure out how they wanted it to look. They took turns and listened to what everyone had to say. A couple of the children made the menu. Last time we met, they all came up with 3 flavors and 3 toppings. They wrote the words on the menu and quickly put it up for everyone to see. We continue to talk about Purim with the children. We set out a table of small parts and recycled materials. Our goal was for children to explore sound. As we move on to make groggers for Purim, we want the children to hear what different materials sound like when they drop into a plastic item, glass and tin. They enjoyed that center because they got to create sound in many different ways. They will then take their knowledge of the sound and make their groggers out of recycled materials that they found interesting when testing the sound. Some things that were heard were: “Metal is louder than the plastic.” “I like the feathers inside, but you can’t hear the sound they make.” “I think the beads are pretty and they make a nice sound.” “The foam doesn’t make sound in the metal or the plastic.” “All of these together make sound.” We can’t wait to use these materials to make our groggers next week. We will dress up on Tuesday and shake our groggers when we hear Haman’s name!
