We started off our week together spending a lot of time outdoors. We gathered together with all the other Pre K classes and enjoyed a Tu Bishvat seder led by Rabbi Sari. She went through the seder and talked about the four seasons. She showed this visual by pouring purple grape juice into white grape juice a little at a time. They saw first the white grape juice alone which represented winter which is the season we are currently in. Each time she poured a little more w got to see a little change. We made a connection to the Passover seder by asking 4 questions. We asked about what fruits had an edible skin, what fruits had a seed or pit inside, what fruits could you eat everything and they were all very into this and were shouting out answers! We said the blessings over eating fruit and said the shehecheyanu together. The best part was we sat outside in the shalom garden in-between the beautiful olive trees with the wind blowing in our hair. When the seder was over each kid was able to go to the table that was filled with all the food we talked about in the seder. They tried, pomegranate, grapes, raisins, oranges, olives, and avocado. After we enjoyed this delicious treat, we joined the rest of the ECC for a Tu Bishvat sing along! We sang songs all about trees and the kids really enjoyed it! The best part might have been right after we walked outside Plotkin chapel to grab a shovel and help plant a Myrtle tree! We use the branch and leaves from a Myrtle tree for Sukkot and add it to our lulav. We can’t wait to visit this tree and help take care of it and watch it grow so we can hopefully use part of it for Sukkot next year.
We introduced the letter W this week. We sang a song with a lot of words that start with a W. The kids really enjoy singing and we try to incorporate it as much as possible. We went over what it looks like and each kid got to form the W with 4 “Big Lines”. Then we discussed the sound of it. They love learning the letters and it shows by how patient they are and focused they are during these group times. We couldn’t stop planting this week! We saw that there was a planter empty on our big yard so we decided to plant some chives and parsley. We will water it and make sure it gets enough sun so it can grow. We love walking the kids through the process of a plant or tree. We took the opportunity to go deeper into our Wise Learning Process and talk about the beginning of a plant. Our Universal Theme for Pre K is “Beginnings”. We talked a lot this week about the beginning of a plant and how they always start out as a seed. We planted seeds on the big yard and the patio. We can’t wait to watch this process as well. We started the process of how to form their names. Now that we have worked with the Handwriting Without Tears program for a few months now, we are certain they know how to form the letters appropriately. They know to start each letter at the top. We are beginning to practice individually with them to form their names even though we have not gone through all the letters just yet. We look forward to seeing their progress with this. We read a book this week on the Solar System. We have never seen this class more interested than they were during this time. They were intrigued and inspired by this book. The past few months we have focused on music for our emergent curriculum. We have noticed the kids have not been as interested in it as they were before. After this book we were inspired to focus our emergent curriculum in Room 7 on the Solar System! We heard a few kids went home and talked about it and we are sure this will be an amazing opportunity to learn with the kids more about our Solar System. We will incorporate all the other parts of our day into our learning with the Solar System. If you have any books or things at home that have to do with the Solar System, please send them in with your child to share with the class. We look forward to our learning in this area. We added in Language of the Discipline from our Wise Learning Process curriculum as well. We went over vocabulary that goes with the Solar System. This icon shows that there are words we can use when talking about this subject. We started with the plants because that is what the kids know already. We will add to our list of vocabulary to learn more words that will add to our learning. The kids really enjoyed a new project we put out at the art table. Since this week was the letter W, we had each of them weave paper through string. This not only was as project that started with the letter W, but helped strengthen their fine motor skills. They had to focus on putting the paper through over and under the string. This took a lot of focus and every kid said it was a lot of fun. We can’t wait to do more of this throughout the year as well. Shabbat Shalom, Rachel and Linda Reminders: -The week of January 28th we are focusing on the letter “X”. Share day will be on Friday.
