Hello Room 3! Your children have been describing and adding layers of depth to their knowledge about Tu B'Shevat in many ways. They have determined why details are important to understanding the relationships within this holiday. We presented a picture of a tree and asked the students to describe what they saw. Children included answers such as, “The leaves are green,” “The trunk is big and brown,” and, “There is grass surrounding the tree.” After defining details and describing the tree, the children began to make connections. One student said, “Everything that is alive has a birthday,” and another one mentioned that, “Carrots grow from the ground too.” This conversation continued for a while, and all of the children had significant answers. We introduced ‘cause and effect,' and the children were able to understand why an event can happen (cause), and what happens as a result (effect). For example, in order for plants to grow, they need water, air, and light; and with all those nutrients, plants will grow. The word ‘related’ played an important role in our discussions this week. The children talked about why apples are related to oranges, and provided their thoughts. As a whole, the class decided that apples and oranges are related because they are both round, they grow on trees, they’re both sweet fruit, they can create juice, they both have skin, and they both have seeds. A huge thank you to Rebecca Cohen for reading stories about nature to the children at the library this week. We are looking forward to our Tu B’Shevat celebration on Wednesday, February 4th, will all of our Pre-K friends. Shabbat Shalom everyone! Although it has been a short week in room 3, we have introduced the delightful holiday Tu’Bshevat. The children compare and contrast the tree’s birthday with their own birthdays, and have discussions about why trees benefit our environment. The kids are excited to try a variety of fresh and dried fruit during our Pre-K Tu’Bshevat celebration on February 4th. Next week, we will read more about the effect trees have on us and our surroundings, and provide a lot more details of this enriching holiday. Our students can’t get their hands off of books! They approach reading with excitement as often as possible. We are so proud of their motivation to identify letters and short words; and the language they have been using to describe the details within stories. The children are demonstrating teamwork and leadership skills with one another. We are looking forward to another week with your wonderful children! Shabbat Shalom and enjoy your weekend. A huge thank you to Shahrzad and Keili for reading a couple of stories to the class. We made our way to the elementary science lab this week. The children experienced a hands-on experiment by touching different textures. They were able to compare and contrast the sizes, shapes, colors, and consistencies of flubber and dough. Students made observations such as how the materials bend, stretch, and whether or not they can bounce. After that, the children sang a song about plants and their growth process. The kids have so much fun in the science lab and they absolutely love learning about all the different mammals in the classroom. We have continued to talk about Martin Luther King Jr. and we introduced Rosa Parks' story to the class. The children are accustomed to using the words freedom, equality, peace, care, together, and love. They are able to identify the words, read them, and thoroughly explain the meaning of these words and why they are so important in today’s world. Students are continuing to make progress with lower case letters, math, and short readings. We are beyond proud of their dedication, enthusiasm, and the skills they apply to the academics in the classroom each and every day. Wishing everyone a Shabbat Shalom!
With love, Vera and Karen Happy New Year room 3! We missed everyone, and we are so happy to have you all back. The children could not wait to share their exciting stories with one another. Using their strong fine motor skills, each child thoroughly illustrated their winter break “experience” on paper with markers, crayons, and colored pencils. The drawings were a part of their journal entry titled, “My Winter Break.” One by one, the children dictated their descriptions to us as we wrote down their words to complete the entry. Since Martin Luther King Day is coming up, he has been the central topic of this week. We have discussed the depth of why it is important to accept everyone around us regardless of their race. After reading stories to the class about the historical leader and hero, MLK Jr., students understand how significantly important it is to recognize all people for who they are, and not by the color of their skin. Once the class heard MLK Jr.’s “I Have A Dream” speech, the children created a personal illustration of their own “dream.” Similar to their journals, the kids shared their interpretations to us as we wrote down their words below the drawings. We are ready for a productive and wonderful start to 2015 with all of your children! Shabbat Shalom and have a great weekend.
