Chag Sameach room 3! It has been a remarkable start with your magnificent children, and a rewarding journey thus far. We have seen our students flourish, grow, and experience wholeness each and every day. The children have grown so much by practicing new lessons, learning new skills, and by developing new relationships. Academically, we are beyond proud of the progress they have made so far, and the confidence they have gained through learning tools and challenges. We are looking forward to continuing this exciting journey in 2015 when we return from winter break. We cannot thank you enough for making this a great experience for all of us. We couldn’t have done it without all of your help and dedication. A huge thank you to all of the parents for our holiday gifts, we truly appreciate your generous thoughts.
We have sent home a blank journal for all the children. On their free time, they can draw pictures of activities they have done, time with friends, or any details they wish to share with the class when they return back from the break. Parents can help write the children’s words and any descriptions/thoughts they have. Wishing you all a blessed holiday filled with joy, love and peace. We hope you have a great and safe break. It has been a ton of fun in room 3 this week! Hanukkah brings out the creativity in the children by collaborating arts and crafts with this exciting holiday. We made our own menorahs by collecting colored cubes, sea shells, and mini wooden blocks. The children chose a pattern of their choice to sort, build, and glue together their own hanukkiot. Students understand the meaning of a “Maccabee” and the depth of leadership. Each child made their own headband out of poster board to resemble the shields that the Maccabees wore in order to protect themselves. The children are filled with facts and songs about Hanukkah and are constantly discussing the history of this miraculous holiday. Students are making connections between Hanukkah and other things we do as a community. For example, the children recognize 8 candles (9 including the Shamash) on the hanukkiah for Hanukkah, and 2 candles total on the candlesticks for Shabbat. Children are also differentiating the foods we eat on specific holidays. For example, they connect latkes with Hanukkah and turkey with thanksgiving. They are able to identify the purposes of each role/object.

Reminders Snack mom for week of December 15: Myra Shabbat boy for December 19: Gabriel Room 3 brings in the light by introducing the story of Hanukkah. By reading stories, asking questions, and singing songs, the children are making connections with this festive holiday. Students are communicating with one another about Hanukkah, and are constantly reviewing the details of the story. As a class, we classified the different types of menorahs into groups according to their shapes, sizes, and materials of which they are made. After separating the menorahs into different groups, each child chose a menorah to copy- and make out of clay. This fun activity helped strengthen the children’s fine motor skills by molding, rolling, pinching, and ripping the clay with their hands. The word “community” has been playing a huge role in the classroom. Children understand the characteristics of a real community, and what it takes in order to “build” a real community. They are making real-life connections with what they see on a daily basis and bring in their ideas to the classroom. It’s great to hear their conversations between one another about what they think takes place inside markets, banks, police stations, and post offices. They are making great choices with words as well as enhancing their vocabulary on a daily basis. Room 3 can’t get enough of their numbers and letters. The children are continuing to explore lower case letters and number sorting. We are looking forward to another productive week filled with creativity and fun learning. Light Up LiteracyHanukkah contains eight wonderful days to gather with family and friends, play driedel, eat latkes, delight in increasing light and blessing, as well as give and receive gifts of all sorts. What if you took one night of Hanukkah and gave a very special gift to children who have neither books nor adults to read to them? This year, make a difference in a child’s life and experience the joy of tzedakah and g’milut chasadim by joining us for Light Up Literacy, a tikkun olam program that makes great happen by bringing books to kids in rural Guatemala. This fall, Wise School is partnering with Reading Village to celebrate our ability to read while actively addressing the darkness of illiteracy in Guatemala, the second poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Approximately 50% of the nation’s rural population remains illiterate and lives without reading. Together, we hope to extinguish the darkness of illiteracy in Guatemala. From December 1 to December 19, we hope your family will participate in our Light Up Literacy campaign. The premise is simple: by reading books at home and at school, your children can help raise money to bring literacy to students in rural Guatemala. It’s really easy: 1. PLEDGE: Help your son or daughter collect pledges from family or friends for every book they read. 2. READ: Support your child as they read to themselves, to you, or to a younger child in their life.
