Newsletter Room 9 January 22-25 2019
This week Room 9 celebrated the holiday of Tu B’Shevat with a wonderful Seder out on the Shalom Garden. We were surrounded by the beautiful olive trees and it couldn’t be a better place to have a celebration of the trees. Rabbi Sari officiated and she was able to show and tell us all the significance of each fruit and why it is important to this holiday. We talked about the fruits that we don’t eat the peel, such as avocados, tangerines and pomegranates, and those that we don’t eat the pit, such as olives. The Rabbi helped us with the special prayers that we say on Tu B’Shevat and it was a special moment, especially being outside in such a beautiful space. The children were then able to walk to the ‘buffet’ table and take whatever fruit they wanted to sample. We saw many children trying various types of fruits, and it was great to see. After the Seder, the entire nursery school walked over to Plotkin Chapel to sing songs together with our director, Jen. We all had fun singing about trees! Finally, each class helped to plant a beautiful new myrtle tree outdoors. All of room 9 took a shovelful of dirt and helped to plant it. We will all watch as this lovely tree grows and matures, just as your beautiful children grow and mature! We also spent time this week planting vegetables and herbs in the classroom. First, we talked about where plants come from, and immediately we heard responses like: “from a seed.” We also noticed that each type of seed is different from the other. We discussed the differences in appearance and the source of the seed i.e. does it come from the flower or from the fruit. Each child decorated their own planter, and then chose which kind of vegetable or herb they wanted to plant. They had many to choose from, such as tomatoes, beans, peas, parsley, and basil. They each were very careful and gentle when planting and now will have to wait as the little sprout starts to grow. On Wednesday we visited the library where Jake’s mom, Rachel read us three books. It is always such a pleasure having a parent come in to the library and see all the children listening and enjoying themselves tremendously. Thank-you Rachel! Thursday, during Storah time, Rabbi Josh told the story of Moses and how difficult it was for him to bring the entire Jewish people out of the land of Egypt to the land of Israel. He had so much responsibility and pressure to make sure everyone was safe and healthy while crossing the desert. He told us how important it is to ask for help at times, when we need it, to do our jobs better. After our time with the Rabbi, room 9 went on a walk together around Wise School. One of the things our campus is known for is its beauty. There are so many beautiful trees all over Wise School. We went looking at all the trees that are on our grounds and each child decided which tree was their ‘favorite’. We took pictures and then when we got back to the classroom, they each drew a picture of their tree for their journal. The children took their time drawing each part of their tree, starting from the trunk, then the branches, and for some the leaves. Then they expressed all the special things trees give us. On Friday we celebrated Shabbat with the Nimni Family. It was very special for Sarah to have her family here to celebrate Shabbat with all of room 9!
