Newsletter Room 9 March 25th - March 29th 2019
On Monday we visited the Music Room. Each child was given a percussion instrument by Maestro, such as bongos, tambourines, or drums. Some children were not happy with what they got, but that continues to be a learning experience for them, and as the lesson went on, they got over their initial reluctance. Maestro went around the circle and would produce a series of beats and then each child tried to produce the same series of beats. It was a terrific lesson in duplicating patterns. After that Maestro took out his huge keyboard and the children were able to come up, one at a time, and play a song on the keyboard using numbers next to the keys. As Maestro called out the note, they had to identify the number on each key. They all really enjoyed learning how to create music. We have really noticed that while ‘just playing’ on the yard, two children who don’t really play that much with each other had a conflict. With our guidance, they talked it out, came to a resolution, and shook hands. We noticed that they then spent the rest of the yard time together. Solving conflicts in a sincere and confident way goes a long way in creating harmony and respect within a classroom and school community and deepens a relationship. The children have continued to explore our ‘loose parts’ during our free play and have come up with some extraordinary ideas. One day we asked them: What are you making with the loose parts? Riley said: A rocket ship. Sonny said: Me and Whitman are making a Rocketship and are connecting it to Hunter’s and Riley’s. We’re making a window. We need a window so we can see, especially if we’re too high in space. Jordan said: I’m also making a Rocket. Then Whitman said: I saw this astronaut and he was playing guitar up in space with no suit and he was circling around the earth. We also introduced the season of Spring. We asked the class: How do you know that it is Spring? Whitman said: “It’s hot, but not too hot.” Sonny said: “Flowers are growing.” Avery said: “Leaves are growing and trees are growing.” Hunter said: “Butterflies are flying.” Then Avery added: “When dandelions start to grow, it’s when you blow them.” Along with the season of Spring, we recounted the story of Passover. As soon as we started talking about the mean Pharoah and the Jewish slaves the class suddenly remembered not only many facets of the story, but many songs as well. We will be doing many projects, but we started by having each child make their own individual Passover placemat, using beautiful Spring colors. First each child traced flowers, butterflies or birds onto their paper, and then they used watercolors to paint over the white paper. The results are so beautiful. While doing these lovely placemats the children are strengthening their fine motor muscles as they express their creativity. We want to thank each and every one of you for taking the time to come in and talk to us about your wonderful children. We are partners and we all work together for the same goal; the success and happiness of your child.
