This week we introduced Hanukkah to our classroom. The children noticed right away the transformation of our room with the books, Hannukiot, lights and dreidel decorating their environment. They were eager to hear the story and many were able to recall details of the Macabees and the miracle of the oil. We discussed how before Hanukkah starts we will be making something special to light our Hanukkah candles with. We discussed the shamash candle being the helper for all the others to be lit. We love rocks in room 9 and we love collecting them. They are so curious about what different stones are called and how some look look like crystals and they come in many different colors and shapes. We took a walk around our beautiful campus on search for rocks. These rocks that we found will be part of our Hanukkah projects. It is really nice that we get to put a piece of what we love into our work. Our Hannukiot will show a little piece of each and every one of us. We read a book this week called, Runaway Dreidel! The kids were mesmerized by every single page. This dreidel took off and passed so many things on its way. It went past animals, shops, Delis and much more. We used dreidels to paint this week. Not only is it fun to watch the dreidles spin around with paint splattering everywhere, but this also helps their fine motor development! While the kids were spinning the dreidels filled with paint, we heard them say, “Woh!” “It looks like fireworks!” Dreidel art, that sounds fun!” “This is fun!” “Look at it go!” “Hey, the paper’s a dreidel!” “It’s a blueberry pie dreidel!” “I’m an artist!” We made them 3 dimensional and the kids were able to tell us where their dreidel ran off to! Light Up Literacy is a complain Wise School has been a part of for many years. We talked to the kids about how we are so lucky to have books in our classroom, a library at our school, books at home, books at our grandparent’s houses and much more. We talked about how we have books all around us, but unfortunately not all kids are as lucky as we are. We talked about how Hanukkah is approaching and we get many gifts from friends and family. We then moved on to how we would feel about giving gifts, or giving something to people who do not have what we do. This stemmed into an amazing conversation about giving books to these children in Guatemala. We sent home a flyer at the beginning of the week with more information. Please read this with your child and let them share what we talked about in class. Attached is a video they have made for us. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vKP2Y3hj16k Shabbat Shalom, Rachel and Linda Reminders: -Shabbat Child on Friday, December 8th, Mia and Ariana. -Wednesday, December 6th Library helper is Sarah. -Classroom Hanukkah party December 12th, at 11:00 in Room 9!
