Room 9 Newsletter November 26-30 2018
This week in Room 9 has been all about the story of Hanukkah. We retold the story and the children remembered many of the main points of this miraculous and uplifting event. We discussed how the Jewish people lived under the rule of the wicked King Antiochus and couldn’t be free to worship the way they wanted to. Judah Maccabee led his small band of Jews against the king’s mighty army...and won! We even performed the story during class time. Hunter made a fierce King Antiochus, Avery was brave Judah Maccabee, Sarah was the Maccabee who found the oil jar in the Temple with only a little bit of oil and Adler was the one who put the oil into the menorah. The rest of the kids were the brave Jews who stood up against all odds to win the battle against the king’s soldiers. It was so fun and rewarding to see all the children participating. This week we have also been rehearsing songs that we will be singing for our Hanukkah party next week. The children are working hard and are excited to show you their songs. They also made shields and candle headbands to complete their transformation as Maccabees! Each child in Room 9 has also been hard at work on their own Hanukkiah. When called up they each counted how many candle holders they needed. Then they glued each on the base. They then decided how they wanted to decorate it using stones, pearls or other beautiful objects. Each Hanukkiah is unique and beautiful. This week we also had the incredible Book Fair here at Wise. On Wednesday, many of our children dressed up as a character from their favorite book. It was such a fun day for everyone and it showcased how much Room 9 loves books and reading! We also want to thank all the families who donated books to our class. We so appreciate it and will love reading them and looking at them all year long. We also conducted an experiment with the class using oil and water. We discussed the fact that scientists first start by posing a question: what will happen if...then they come up with predictions. We posed the question: What will happen if we mix oil with water? The children came up with their predictions: Whitman: “It will turn into yellow water” Hunter: “It will go all the way to the top and it will turn into yellow and clear gel.” Avery: “It will turn into pink and blue and purple water.” Sarah: In response said “it will never happen, it will turn to yellow water.” Jordan: “It might turn into oil.” Adler: “It might turn into orange water.” Liora: “It will turn to red.” Isabella: “it will turn into a rainbow.” We conducted the experiment by first pouring the oil into a bottle and then pouring water in...and the children were amazed that the oil rose to the surface! This week we also focused on the letter ‘Ff’. All week the children found time to let us know all the words they could think of that start with the letter Ff. We heard such words as fish, fox, food, fireman, Frank Sinatra and others as well. We love how they are so excited with our letter of the week program! Thank you to the Flamm family for a wonderful Shabbat, and spending time with us.
