Newsletter Room 9 December 17th -21st 2018
This week we have continued our unit work on the self, focusing on our immediate families. This gives the children a way of focusing on who is in their family and what constitutes a family. We had several wonderful discussions on this topic and then each child was called up to express individually, who is in their family, and their feelings about their family. We then had each child draw their family using colored pencils. The results are so varied and unique. Each child was very proud of their work. This week in music we had an awesome session with Maestro! When entering the Music Lab we all noticed two boxes filled with bells. He handed them out to each of the children and they immediately heard that each bell made a different sound. First, he proceeded to teach the class to do the scale. But really it was all about being patient, following directions, and exhibiting self-control. Then, Maestro taught the class to play Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star with the bells! The class was so excited when they realized that they were indeed playing a song! Next, we moved to the large drums. Each child sat behind a drum and again needed to follow directions as Maestro first did a pattern of beats and the class followed. It was a fun, but also an important learning experience of once again listening and following directions. This week we also introduced as part of our family unit the concept of the ‘family name’. In the following days we did many different games with the class that incorporated their last name. It was so extraordinary how fast all the children were able to recognize their own last name and each others’ last names! We are loving the way each child is so proud of their family name and will stand up with confidence when he or she hears it. Then they will announce with a confident voice their first and last name. We enjoyed visiting the library and hearing three terrific books read by Avery’s mom, Jen. During the reading we had a shelter-in-place drill which the entire class reacted to in a calm and quiet manner. We were very proud of them and it went off very well. Thank-you to Jen for reading for us, we enjoyed it immensely. During our Storah time, Rabbi Josh told rooms 9 and 2 a wonderful story about Pharoah and how the Jewish people were slaves in Egypt. Many of our children in room 9 remembered the story and helped retell it. Also, some even remembered that the story is about the holiday of Passover. We love having the Rabbi come in and spend time with us every Thursday. We want to take this time to wish all of you a restful and relaxing winter break and a healthy and happy new year!
