Newsletter Room 9 March 11th - March 14th 2019
This week we noticed the warm sunshine and the blue skies and we all know that spring will be here soon. While out on the big yard during the week many of the children saw so many small butterflies. We found out that there is a huge ‘migration’ of painted lady butterflies migrating to Oregon. We took the class over to the fence to watch as hundreds of butterflies kept flying over our yard. It was such a beautiful sight to see! We continued to discuss the holiday of Purim this week. The children really know the story and have such fun acting out the characters. They also created faces out of paper plates. Each child chose either Queen Esther, Hamen, King Ahashverosh, Modechai or Queen Vashi. They could choose from various art media to make their faces. Please come check it out. We talked about King Ahashverosh and that he lived in a castle, and we talked about castles and what they look like. Someone said they look like shapes. We found many beautiful pictures of real castles and we asked the class to draw their own castle. The results are awesome. Along with the castles, you will find the children retelling the story of Purim in their own words. The ability to recall and retell a story reflects a child’s complex cognitive ability. This is important in many aspects of thinking and learning, such as language and literacy, planning, following directions, reflecting, and imagining. This week we’ve been preparing for our Purim festivities by acknowledging that along with the celebrations we also give to one another with ‘Mishloach Manot’ or gifts. The children have decorated bags that will be filled up next week. They are so excited to share their goodies with a friend. We also talked about Queen Esther and how courageous and brave she was to stand up for the Jewish people. Then we asked the class what is the definition of bravery? To our surprise, we got a definition from the children themselves. Then we asked the class: When were you brave? Whitman:” I was scared when I swam in the deep end of my pool, but I still did it.” Avery:” When I don’t have a nightlight.” Ryder: “When I was in my bed.” Riley: “When I was on the monkey bars and I tried to go across.” Isabella: “I was brave when I got a shot” Adler: “A long time ago I had a shot even though I was scared.” Hunter: “When I got my haircut, I thought the razor would be scary.” Jake: “I was brave during my dream.” Liora: “When I was a baby, I got a shot that hurt and I didn’t cry.” Sonny: “When I was going to go to Cleveland with my grandma I was scared, but I went and I liked it. “ Sarah: “When I went camping and I jumped into the water, I wasn’t scared of the alligator," Jordan: “I was scared because I was going to the doctor’s office. When the other doctors were doing something to make me feel better, I was brave.” Thank-You to the Barcohana’s for being our Shabbat family last Friday.
