Newsletter Room 9 May 13th - May 17th 2019
This week in Room 9 we have been delving deeper into what makes each one of us independent and able to make good choices. We have had important discussions about self-help skills such as what we do when we wake-up in the morning, and how we can get ready to start our day. It is empowering for the children to be able to choose their outfit, dress themselves, put on their socks and shoes, brush their teeth and feel the enormous sense of accomplishment that these tasks bring. We asked the class: How do you exercise independence when you get ready for school? Sarah said: “I get dressed by myself.” Avery said: “I help mommy ... help my sister get ready.” Ryder said: “I tell my mom what do you think of my shirt?” Hunter said: “I eat breakfast, and I get my clothes on. My mom helps me with my socks.” Jordan said:” I make my breakfast, cereal and milk.” Riley said: “I put on my own shoes.” Adler said: “At nighttime I put on my pajamas all by myself.” Jake said: “I brush my own brush.” Isabella said: “I brush my teeth and I get dressed and I eat my breakfast.” Sonny said: “I get dressed by myself.” Whitman said: “I eat my own breakfast and dress by myself.” The children have also been learning their phone numbers (really their mom’s cell phone numbers) as a learning tool which helps them to not only learn numbers and number relationships, but a way to get in touch with mom if need be. We have been using these phone numbers in all sorts of ways, using games, etc. and we have been so surprised at how many in the class have already learned these long phone numbers (remember they need to learn the area code, too!). Many of the children were thrilled to discover that some of their friends shared the same first three digits. They also discovered that they all have 10 digits in each phone number. This week the entire Pre-K has also started rehearsals for Pre-K celebration. All the kids are excited and enthusiastic and eager to show you all the songs they are learning for this very special event! We celebrated Sonny’s 5th birthday with yummy chocolate chip cookies that he helped make. Happy Birthday Sonny! We had the pleasure to welcome Sonny’s grandma, JoJo as our very last, but not least Library reader. The children enjoyed listening to the story and we all say Thank you, Grandma Jo Jo! Reminders: No school on Monday, May 27th Memorial Day Room 9 Closing Circle Monday, June 3rd @ 9:15 a.m. Pre-K Celebration: Thursday, June 6th
