Miss Bolkin and Mrs. Coatney are very excited to begin another wonderful year of science. Below is a curricular overview for our upper grades for the upcoming 2016-2017 school year. Please feel free to email us if you have any questions or concerns.
4th Grade: Students will use teacher-led inquiry and the engineering design process to develop their science concept knowledge. Lessons are based on the Next Generation Science Standards and include topics such as Energy, Body Systems, and Earth Processes. Students will make observations, ask questions, conduct research, cite evidence, develop hypotheses and design experiments throughout the year in a supportive, hands-on, minds-on environment. 5th Grade: Students will use guided inquiry and the engineering design process to develop their science concept knowledge. Lessons are based on the Next Generation Science Standards and include topics such as Earth’s Systems, Ecosystem Dynamics, and Earth in Space, and Matter and Its Properties. Students will make observations, ask questions, conduct research, cite evidence, develop hypotheses and design experiments throughout the year in a supportive, hands-on, minds-on environment. 6th Grade: Students will use inquiry and the engineering design process to develop their science concept knowledge. Lessons are based on the Next Generation Science Standards and include topics such as Cells and Genetics, Earth’s Systems, and Earth and Human Activity. Students will make observations, ask questions, conduct research, cite evidence, develop hypotheses and design experiments throughout the year, most notably during their own Science Fair projects that will be showcased during STEAM Night on February 1, 2017. Up to thirteen student projects will then be selected to represent Wise School at the Los Angeles County Science and Engineering Fair on March 23-26, 2017. Kindergarten: We did not have Kindergarten this week due to the Library Awards. We look forward to seeing them next year in 1st Grade!
1st Grade: This week, we finished our school year off with science centers that incorporated their engineering skill sand creativity! 2nd Grade: This week, we finished our school year off with science centers that incorporated their engineering skill sand creativity! 3rd Grade: This week, we finished our school year off with science centers that incorporated their engineering skill sand creativity! 4th Grade: This week, we tested our morse code designs and sent messages to one another. It was a great way to end the school year! 5th Grade: This week, the students presented their element projects. It was a great way to end the school year! 6th Grade: This week, the students presented their Great Scientist projects and took home their science fair boards. We are so proud of all of the work our 6th graders have done this year, and wish them luck in middle school! ***WE HOPE EVERYONE HAS A GREAT SUMMER!!! SEE YOU NEXT YEAR!*** Kindergarten: This week, we explored some of the 6th Grade science projects, and had a chance to work in centers that focused on different scientific and engineering concepts.
1st Grade: This week, we wrapped up our unit on light and sound by watching an exciting Magic School Bus video all about sound energy. 2nd Grade: This week, we wrapped up our unit on energy by discussing how heat energy is created and playing a few heat related games. 3rd Grade: This week, we finished our magnet design challenge and tested our inventions. 4th Grade: This week, we finished building our morse code devices. We look forward to testing them next week. 5th Grade: This week, we had our Human Development Unit during science and PE class period, and turned in the element research projects. 6th Grade: We had Science Fair this past Monday at Open House. The 6th graders presented their projects extremely well, and we are so proud of all of the hard work everyone put into their experiments. Kindergarten: We did not see Kindergarten this week, but we look forward to seeing them next Wednesday!
1st Grade: This week, one class went to the garden. They planted seeds from cauliflower and other vegetables to grow new vegetables. The other class learned about light and the difference between opaque, transparent, and translucent objects. 2nd Grade: This week, we finally tested our kites to see how high they could fly! It was a lot of fun! 3rd Grade: This week, we continued working on our magnet design challenge by creating a tool that solves a problem using magnetism. 4th Grade: This week, we continued working on our morse code devices. We look forward to completing them and testing them soon. 5th Grade: This week, we continued to work on our element research projects. The projects need to be submitted to Miss Bolkin and Mrs. Coatney by May 27. 6th Grade: This week, we began wrapping up our science fair projects. Science Fair is this coming Monday, May 23 so those students who are not done with their boards will need to take them home over the weekend to complete. |
