March 27-31, 2017
Passover is almost here, and Room 12 has been busy preparing! We have continued to explore the Passover story through music and stories. The children are doing a great job of grasping the story, as we have practiced going over the seder every day with the other Explorer classrooms. We are excited to go through the seder with all of the families next week and to show you all the hard work we have put into perfecting the songs. In honor of Passover, we discussed that the story took place in the desert. The children asked many questions about what a desert is and what kind of animals live in the desert. Ayla asked, “Do snakes live in the desert?” Noah questioned, “The sand has sand instead of dirt, right?" To answer the children’s questions, we set up a sensory project where we made desert like sand out of sandbox sand. We mixed the sand with oil and flour into the sand to make kinetic sand. The children mixed brown powder paint into the kinetic sand to emulate the brown sand in the desert. They enjoyed building pyramids out of the sand using cups, and they put plastic desert animals all around their creations. This activity gave them a creative experience in building what the desert was like for the Jewish people in the Passover story, and it provided an outlet for dramatic play with the animals . In addition, the activity helped strengthen fine motor skills through the building of small pyramids. Room 12 also participated in a fun Passover-inspired cooking activity. The children learned that We, the Jewish people, did not have time to wait for the bread to rise. Instead, we ended up with matzo. We used matzo to make a Passover granola. The children used their fantastic fine motor skills to cut up a variety of dried fruit into small pieces. Paisley cut up dried apricots, Kayden cup up dates, and Carter broke banana chips into small pieces. Michael helped mix all of the ingredients together and added honey, brown sugar and oil to create the granola. The children loved trying the matzo granola with yogurt for snack. Ella said, “I love the granola because it is so crunchy!” The children began working on different art projects to take home for their own Passover seder. We are so excited for you all to see the hard work that the children have put into these projects. We will continue these projects next week, so they will be ready to take home on the day of our seder. We also want to thank Elliot’s family for joining us for Shabbat this Friday. We loved singing songs, prayers and eating challah with you all! We also had a fabulous time celebrating Elliot’s birthday.
