April 24-28, 2017
Room 12 had a very busy first week back! We were so excited to see all of the children on Monday. We missed them very much over the past two weeks and enjoyed hearing about everyone’s Spring Break. We introduced a special holiday coming up next week, Yom Ha-atz-ma'ut, Israel’s birthday! The children were very intrigued that a place can have a birthday. When we told them that Israel is celebrating its 69th birthday, Noah questioned, “Is Israel a he or a she?” We explained that places can have birthdays, just like people. We also talked about how some places are older than other places. We discussed how we live in the United States of America. We researched the age of America and then compared it with the age of Israel. While Israel is turning 69, the U.S. is turning 241 years old. Although they didn’t quite grasp the concept that America can be 241 years old, the children did understand that places can have birthdays too. We also discussed the colors of both the Israeli and the American flags. We compared both flags, and the children realized that the American flag has red in it, while the Israeli flag does not. The children were so excited about celebrating Israel’s birthday and wearing blue and white that they came to school on Thursday ready to celebrate a few days early! On Thursday, the children helped Teacher Mari make hummus, which they learned is a popular food in Israel. We mixed garbanzo beans, lemon, tahini, garlic salt, olive oil, and water in a food processor to make hummus. Carter liked the tahini and said it smelled like seeds. Kora was concerned that we would get seeds from the lemon in the hummus, so we had to squeeze the lemons very carefully. The children were fascinated by how fast the food processor mixes the ingredients. After all of our hard cooking work, Room 12 enjoyed a fabulous and colorful snack of carrots, cucumber, pita chips, and hummus as a beginning celebration of Israel’s birthday. Kayden, Ella, Mason and Paisley loved the hummus, while Skyler and Kora did not like it. We are excited to continue our discussions and celebration for Israel’s 69th birthday next week by making Israel flags and a birthday cake. Thank you to Kayden’s family for celebrating Shabbat with us this Friday. We enjoyed singing Shabbat songs, eating fruit and challah, and praying in Temple!
