Ulpanon Alef is working on Tu B’ Shevat this week. We are learning about the parts of a tree and its functions. We planted beans in cotton with water in clear cups so that we can learn about the parts of a plant. Shoresh (roots) Geevol (stem) and, Aleem (leaves). The children were given paper pieces of the Shkediyah tree and created beautiful creations on construction paper. Every tree is unique and beautiful. We also painted individual trees on canvas ... please look for our new artwork in our class. Next week we will create individual trees out of clay. Every day the children look for their names in Hebrew during circle time and at lunch time. They are learning how to recognize their names and their friends’ names. We enjoyed pajama day with a breakfast with our room 11 friends. Please check out the pictures below. We covered many subjects this week in Ulpanon Alef. We started our unit on
Tu Be’ Shevat – The Birthday of the trees. We sang the Ilanot & Shkediyah song (Almond tree), told the story through a book and used a flannel story with trees birds and butterflies. We spoke about what fruits grow on trees. Tu BiSh'vat or the "New Year of the Trees" is Jewish Arbor Day. The holiday is observed on the 15th (tu) of the Hebrew month of Sh'vat. Scholars believe that originally Tu BiSh'vat was an agricultural festival, marking the emergence of spring. In the 17th century, Kabbalists created a ritual for Tu BiSh'vat that is similar to a Passover seder. Today, many Jews hold a modern version of the Tu BiSh'vat seder each year. The holiday also has become a tree-planting festival in Israel, in which Israelis and Jews around the world plant trees in honor or in memory of loved ones and friends. We discussed Dr. Martin Luther King Junior –and his dream for all people to be friends regardless of the color of their skin. Everyone has equal rights and are friends and should be included. We told the story of Eliezer Veh Ha Gezer – a story about a carrot that was too large to pull out of the ground and with group effort they helped one another pull the enormous carrot out of the ground. The children know the song so please ask them to sing to you. We shredded carrots and made a salad in class this week. We added brown sugar, raisins and lemons and all the children enjoyed it very much. We completed our Keshet this week. The children used different painting instruments to create various textures on each color of the Rainbow. ****Next Wednesday, January 21, 2015 we will have a pajama day. We will have a breakfast picnic with our Room 11 friends. Please dress your child in PAJAMAS!!! NO SCHOOL – Monday & Tuesday of next week. Parent Reminders & Messages: Snack of the week: January 20 - Oliver Shabbat Child: January 23 - Justin Library: January 28, 2015 – Henry & Karen Shabbat Shalom, Mira & Liat We hope you all had a restful winter break. We are so happy to be back where we belong with our room 15 friends! The children are delighted to be back as well, and have all grown. They all remember our classroom routines and have adjusted well in this first week back.
We are continuing our ongoing Noah’s Ark project this week and are creating a keshet (Rainbow). We are using various painting and art techniques to create each color. So far we have completed adom, katom and tzaov (Red, Orange & Yellow). At morning meetings we are discussing what it means to have Kavod (Respect) and we respect our families (mom & dad), friends, teachers, Rabbis, Torah and G-d. We spoke about how we use our imagination (Demaiyon). This conversation was brought on by one of the children expressing that he was worried about a scary noise in his house. We read the story Alligator Under My Bed and discussed that we are all safe in our homes and here in school. We told the story Eliezer ve Hagezer (Eliezer and the carrot) and the children will be able to tell you what happened to the carrot. Along with that story we are telling stories and singing songs reviewing all the names of the animals we know. Next week we will continue our work on our keshet (Rainbow) as well as introduce Tu B’Shevat the Birthday of the Trees. We celebrated Aiden’s 4th birthday here in class. Happy Birthday to Aiden! |
