Shabbat Shalom Ulpanon Bet Families, Thank you for your time and open communication during our Parent/Teacher conferences. This week, we said goodbye to Purim and introduced the Pesach (Passover) holiday. We learned Passover vocabulary, including some of the plagues, Ke’arat Pesach (Seder plate), Layl Haseder (Passover eve), Nes Yam Suf (the miracle of the Red Sea), Haggadah, Matzot, and more. The children are also singing Ma Nishtanah (the Four Questions) and learning about the Passover characters. Every morning during our circle meeting, we welcome the day with the Modeh Ani prayer and the Hatikva (the national anthem of Israel). As we explored the lyrics of Hatikva, we talked about the line, ‘lihiyot am chofshi b’artzaynu’ (‘to be a free people in our country’), focusing on the word chofesh (freedom). During our ensuing discussion, the children shared their thoughts about the Big Idea of Chofesh, connecting it to earlier Ulpanon Bet lessons and concepts:
To expand on the concept of chofesh, we invited Lemor, Assistant Director of the EC, to read a Passover book to the Ulpanon Bet friends in English. Lemor sat with the children outside on the sunny patio and read, Freedom: The Timeless Lesson Passover, by Howard M. Kurtz. This book follows the path of freedom throughout history. It opens with the Seder and the celebration of freedom from Pharaoh, reflects on times where Jews did not have freedom to be Jewish (e.g., during the destruction of the Temple, Marranos praying in secret in Spain, etc.), and culminates with the mindful appreciation of the privilege of our own freedom. During P.E with Coach Danny, the children worked on improving their agility and hand-eye coordination through throwing, catching, and serving volleyballs and beach balls. They played an animated game of volleyball in teams before breaking off to practice in pairs. We also enjoyed Israeli folk dancing in class. Thank you to Ethan and family for helping us usher in Shabbat. Important Dates:
