Dear Ulpanon Bet Families,
It has been a whirlwind of a week in Ulpanon Bet, beginning with our Closing Circle on Tuesday! We are very proud of the beautiful job the children did, singing and reciting their words and songs. This has been a representation of their exciting Pre-K journey, through the months, holidays and school activities. The children have grown immensely! We hope you take time to go through the end-of-year binders with your children, to relive their adventures through their artwork, personal journal pages, and the pictures. The children have been rehearsing with the other Pre-K classes in preparation for the Pre-K celebration. We are looking forward to seeing them sing and to celebrating with them. This week, we enjoyed an interactive story with the children that led to an exciting, child-directed discussion about creating shapes from lines, what can be created from a line, how one can change a shape of a figure with a line (or three, or eight). The book Hakav Hashovav (The Mischievous Line), written by Dan and illustrated by Yan, motivated the discussion, the predictions and the whiteboard line activities in class. Some of the children’s words included: “Did you know if you draw a line up and down on a diamond that you get two triangles?” You can do it from side to side too!” “If you smoosh a circle, you can make other shapes!” “A rectangle is like a square, just longer; if you put a line in the middle of a rectangle, it’s two squares. If you erase the line, it’s one rectangle again.” “The diamond is like a twisted square.” Rabbi Josh told us the story of Rabbi Aviba and how he was a poor shepherd working for the landowner, Kalba Savu’a, until the landowner’s daughter, Rachel told him that he should become a scholar and that she would pay for him to go away and study. Rachel said she would wait for him to come back and they would marry, and he returned after 12 years. She then encouraged him to study further and waited another 12 years for him to finally return from his studies as a great teacher and scholar, with thousands of students. Both Rachel and Rabbi Akiba understood the importance of education, patience, sharing kindness and learning with others. This is a lesson for all of us. During Music with Ditza, the children sang and danced to Hebrew songs with scarves and a giant rainbow parachute. In honor of our last Shabbat together, we made and enjoyed pineapple-mango-banana smoothies. Reminders:
Shabbat Shalom! B’vracha, Meirav and Shoshi
