Chag Hanukkah Sameach Ulpanon Bet, This was a busy week in Ulpanon Bet. The children have been preparing for the holiday, singing songs, and enjoying the Hanukkah experience through art. They got to dress up for pajama day and as their favorite literary characters. We have been telling the story of Hanukkah through books and songs; the children are getting familiar with the story and recognizing the symbols. During our discussions, children were able to share many facts about the Hanukkah story: “The miracle was that the oil was supposed to last one day, instead it lasted for 8 days,” “The Maccabees were few and the Greeks- Yevanim were mighty, and the Maccabees won because they believed they can win,” “Beit Hamikdash - the holy temple was in Israel in Jerusalem,” “The mean Greek king is Antiochus.” We are singing Hanukkah songs; the Ulpanon Bet friends’ favorite song is “Banoo Hoshech Legaresh” (We came to say goodbye darkness). We enjoyed playing the Sevivon game. The children are familiar with the Hebrew letters on the sevivon (dreidel) and the meaning of the words. They also know that the dreidel in Israel has the letter ‘pay’ for Poh-here instead of a ‘shin’ for Sham- there. We had fun spinning the dreidel and playing the game to earn skittles. The children dedicated time and enjoyed making their individual Hanukkiyot as a gift to their families. They painted and glued tiles, and helped to wrap the gifts, choosing the color of the wrapping and using the tape dispenser. They are very excited to take the Hanukkiyot home today. We visited the school book fair where Teacher Tatiana read us, “I Know An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Dreidel.” We browsed around the library and looked at books. The children were happy to find a few books in Hebrew. During P.E. with Coach Danny, the children again practiced strengthening their locomotor (gross motor) movements with the ACTIVE! It’s Your Move! Dice. They worked in two teams, taking turns to throw the dice individually and to follow the prompts as a group: Rolling, galloping, sliding, etc. We also practiced soccer skills, aiming, kicking to the goal and running. During music with Ditza, we had a great time singing Hanukkah songs, pretending to be a Hanukkiyah, and dancing like a dreidel. Thank you to Sam and his family for purchasing the book Sipur Ha Marshmallow (The Marshmallow Story), by Hadas Nuriel, from the Book Fair for our Ulpanon Bet Classroom Library! Reminders:
May you have a beautiful holiday that brings light to your homes. With Love, Meirav and Shoshi
