Dear Ulpanon Bet Parents,
In our last week before the break, we continued our seasons unit with a children-directed discussion about what transpires during winter. The children noted the appearance of rainbows in the sky after the rains of the previous week; this prompted thoughtful discussions about how and why rainbows happen: “If it rains, the sun comes to dry it up and then it makes a reflection.” “So when the rain in the sun mix together, then they make two reflections, then it makes the colors and then there’s a rainbow.” “When the sun and the rain mix themselves together it makes a rainbow.” “A couple days ago, I saw the real rainbow on the way home. My mommy’s car was wet. The rainbow appeared in the sky because I told it to come.” “When it’s daytime, there’s thunder and rain and then a rainbow.” “There’s a rainbow for us to see how pretty all the colors look like because God wants us to see them.” “Because God made it beautiful.” “When it rains, the rainbow comes out; it’s because it was rainy and windy and that’s why.” “The sun comes out and the clouds cover the sun, and then it rains and makes a rainbow.” Inspired by the children’s curiosity and enthusiasm, many of our activities followed the Keshet (rainbow) this week:
We are practicing new vocabulary for winter and the children played: Ma Chaser? (what is missing) with vocabulary flashcards. Some of the words the children are learning include: tsa’if (scarf), shluliyot (puddles), mitriyot (umbrellas), magafayim (boots), and kfafot (gloves/mittens). We will add more winter vocabulary when the children return to school in January. The children had a wonderful time in Rolling Dodgeball during P.E. with Coach Danny. They took their turns at the cones to practice aiming and rolling the ball at their friends in the middle of the circle and dodging the ball to stay in the circle. This week, Coach Danny asked the children to review and explain the instructions and rules of the game on their own, and they did a great job. The difficulty level of the game was elevated by adding more friends to the middle of the circle during turns. The children were focused and up to the challenge! During S’Torah Time with Rabbi Josh, we learned about the slaves in Egypt during the time of Pharaoh that didn’t have freedom, and how Jewish mothers were not allowed to raise their sons. We heard the story of Moshe (Moses), whose mother placed him in a basket by the river, where he was found by Yocheved, Pharoah’s daughter. Yocheved needed milk to feed baby Moshe, so Miriam, Moshe’s sister who was watching from the bushes, ran to get her mother. All three women then helped to raise Moshe together. During Music with Ditza, the children sang the Chayot (animals) song with puppets, and Shir Hakukiya (The Cuckoo Song) as they marched with bells. The Cuckoo Song can be found at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sy1O3k5QzBk Thank you to Shana, Brooke’s mom, for reading to us in the library. Brooke chose the following books to read:
