Dear Ulpanon Bet Parents,
We had a fun and festive week in Ulpanon Bet celebrating the light and joy of Hanukkah. We set up Hanukkah centers in the classroom to explore the Hanukkah holiday through different, hands-on experiences. The children enjoyed:
Our Hanukkah party was a hit! The children were very proud to share their Hanukkiyot, s’vivonim (dreidels), and their knowledge of the Hanukkah story with you. They were also excited to sing songs that they have been practicing over the last weeks, including Hanukkah songs. Thank you so much for the abundant Hanukkah feast! Our food table was colorful, and everything was delicious! We appreciate all of you immensely for your dedication to our Hebrew program and classroom! Thank you to Rabbi Josh for leading us in the brachot (blessings) and candle-lighting. We read the book, Sippur Ha Marshmallow, by Hadas Nuriel, a wonderful story about two children, two marshmallows, and delayed gratification. One of the children was able to wait; the other boy loh hitzliach lehitapek (he could not help himself) and ate the marshmallow. The children discussed their thoughts how hard it is to wait for things that you really want. They talked about the challenge of waiting 20 minutes next to a marshmallow without eating it, and the reward of receiving another marshmallow if they succeeded. Many concurred that it would be hard to wait, but that they would try very hard to do so to get the extra marshmallow! The children had the privilege of joining their friends in the other Pre-K classes for a visit from Anne-Marie Baila Asner, the author of the Matzah Ball Books. She introduced the characters from her previous books, Noshy Boy, Shluffy Girl, Klutzy Boy, Shmutzy Girl and Kvetchy Boy. The author then read the children the book Hanukkah with Noshy Boy and Friends, a story about how they turned into the Maccabees, acted out the Hanukkah story, and ate delicious latkes, sufganiyot, and chocolate gelt. The kids each received a Noshy Boy bookmark to take home. During Music with Ditza, the children danced and marched to Hanukkah songs, holding colorful fiber optic light-up wands. They also enjoyed moving in a circle with the group while bouncing the giant dreidel on a rainbow parachute to the music. We were honored to have a visit from the delegations of 10th graders from Shalom Aleichem School in Vilnius, Lithuania, and Shevah Mofet School in Tel Aviv. The children were happy and proud to speak and sing in Hebrew with their new Israeli friends and to share their Ulpanon Bet classroom with them! Thank you to Kobi and his family for helping us usher in Shabbat.
