Dear Ulpanon Bet Families,
This week we delved further into the Purim story in class, and the children took home the story (in English) to read with their families. They then each chose a character to adorn and shared their words about why they chose them and why the characters were integral to the Purim story: “I chose Mordechai because he was the real superhero of the story. If Mordechai didn’t tell Esther about the secret, then the Jewish people would have had to leave.” “I chose Queen Esther. I like that she stood up for her people. She is brave, she is kind and she is Jewish. Her dress is fancy.” “I chose King Achashverosh because: “He is the king and in charge of the good people.” “I want to be the King!” “He was a king and he made the queen leave because she wouldn’t dance, and he made Esther his queen and Esther was able to help the Jews.” “He let the Jewish people stay and saved the day.” “He is a leader and he is kind.” “He is so brave and so strong, and he saved the Jewish people.” “I chose Haman because my last name is Heyman and it sounds like Haman.” During our class discussion, the children noted that the Megillah “looked like a Torah” and maybe had stories in it like the Torah, from a long time ago. One child stated that “it only has one scroll so there’s only one story. That’s the Purim story!” They also discussed Vashti’s refusal to “dance and do a lot of work” for Hamelech Achashverosh and if it was okay to say no the King. The consensus was that if Vashti was tired, she shouldn’t have to go to all the parties and do everything the King says. The children were excited to see their baby pictures on the wall, wearing the clown hats they painted. We switched the hats around and played a game where the children tried to guess the babies in the pictures and write all their names in Hebrew. The guesses were very funny! Thank you to Sinclair’s mom, Talia, for reading the following books to us: The Mitzvah Magician, by Linda Elovitz Marshall, Read About Holidays: Purim, by Carmen Bredson, and Purim Chicken, by Margery Cuyler. In preparation for our Mitzvah Morning, the children also read and discussed the book, Maddi’s Fridge, by Lois Brandt, with our TK teacher, Linda. Specialists: We had a blast in P.E. with Coach Danny, playing Robot Tag and rolling the Dlite Giant Ball in groups. Teacher Cheryl led us on a Yoga Adventure to England to meet Prince William, ride the double-decker bus, visit Big Ben and drink tea. During music with Ditza, the children wore costumes and danced to Purim songs. Thank you so much to all the special guests who joined us for the Generations Mitzvah Project. We had a wonderful and meaningful time decorating and filling the Mitzvah bags, Israeli Dancing, and celebrating Shabbat in community. It was truly a blessing to be together! Important Dates:
Wishing you a Shabbat Shalom! B’vracha, Shoshi and Meirav
