Dear Ulpanon Bet Parents, The children had a fun and engaging week! We continued our exploration of theTu B’Shevat holiday with the book, HaShtil Shel Mor (Mor’s Sapling/Seedling), which tells the story of a group of schoolchildren in Israel taking a field trip with their school to plant trees in honor of Tu B’Shevat. In the story, the children plant saplings together, and then receive an individual seedling in a pot to care for at home. All the children promise to take great care of and nourish their plants, with mixed results: Some friends overwater, and some forget about their plants, leaving withered and dry leaves. Only Mor returned to school with a healthy, blooming, thriving plant in her hands. The teacher asked the children to share their experiences and then reminded them that caring for plants is like caring for delicate children: You should care, love and nourish with mindfulness to get good results. The children continued their movement game to the Hebrew parts of the tree. They learned about the traditional symbolic tree of Tu B’Shevat, the shkaydia/shkaydiot (almond tree/trees), and spent time creating their own beautiful shkaydiot using different size brushes and their hands for the trunk, branches, leaves and roots, and then painting and forming the pink flowers of the tree. Rabbi Sari visited Ulpanon Bet and told a story connected to the weekly Torah Parasha about Sam and Rosie crossing the sea and “Missing the Miracle” because they were too focused on things that were difficult for them (they were wet, stuck in the mud, and everything was heavy). Rabbi Sari spoke of the importance of taking moments to stop and appreciate the wonders around us. During Music with Ditza, the children enjoyed singing more Tu B’Shevat songs, including a new one called Chag la Perach, Chag la Ya’ar (A Holiday for the Flower, A Holiday for the Forest). The video for this song can be found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wATKYVLxW8c. During library time this week, Ivy chose the book Hello, My Name Is Octicorn, by Justin Lowe and Kevin Diller to share with her friends. The children also enjoyed Happy Birthday, Tree! A Tu B’Shevat Story, by Madelyn Rosenberg, and The Day the Crayons Quit, by Drew Daywalt. Thank you to Limor Pouldar for reading to us! Reminders: · Wednesday, January 24th is Sebastian Olshansky’s (Sharona) Library Day. Shabbat Shalom and have a wonderful weekend. B'vracha, Meirav and Shoshi
