We have begun talking to the children about Thanksgiving. Using art, storytelling and food, they are experiencing the holiday through the eyes of a two-year old. We had them remove the husks of corn and some ate it fresh off the cob. We dried out the husks and used them to paint in fall colors. The children are having fun using photos of ships, feasts, Pilgrims and Native Americans on our flannel board and some even know that the name of the ship is the Mayflower!
We are looking forward to our “Friendship Feast” on November 24. Thank you all for offering to bring something to our class that morning. All three First Steps classes will be at one long table on our yard, enjoying a feast together. We’re sorry, but this activity is for the children only. The school had its first “shelter in place” drill for this school year. The children did remarkably well as we filed in to our closet or “bear cave”. They followed directions as we listened for instructions telling us when the drill was over. So, if they tell you that we spent some time in the closet, you’ll know what they were referring to! We’ve started taking the children to Temple on Shabbat. They listened to our wonderful teacher, Ditza, and to Rabbi Knobel who led the children in the s’hma and blessed each of them while standing under a tallit. Gak is always a fun material for children this age. They are accustomed to the feel of Playdough, but Gak has an entirely different texture. It’s slimy and cold and they loved it! Please remember that there is no school on November 27 & 28 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday! Enjoy the food and togetherness with your families. Sharon and Marcela
