Each day, our friends in Room 25 are exposed to a variety of colors. At story time, we tell the story Brown Bear, Brown Bear - and use different colors as we talk about animals in the story, "yellow duck, pink pig, white dog". This week, our focus was on learning colors through art. Each day we painted with a different color paint and talked about concrete objects that were the same color. We started with the color red and asked the children, "can you think of something else that is red?" - "Firetrucks, apples". The next day, we painted with the color orange and again we asked "can you think of something else that is orange?" Many friends noticed the pumpkin in our classroom was orange. This led to a new learning opportunity as we decided to cut open the pumpkin and see what it looked like on the inside. Our friends realized that the inside was the color orange, as well. We also talked about the seeds inside, and read the book, "I'm a Seed". We explored the inside of the pumpkin with our hands and discovered new textures. As we painted, we used our large motor skills, as we touched the inside of the pumpkin, we had new sensory experiences. There are so many great ways to expose our children to colors and to making connections between abstract and concrete things. Ask your child, "What color is a pumpkin?"
