Each year, a team of Wise School students lead by Mrs. Neal enters the DAR Essay Competition. This is a competition held by the Daughters of the American Revolution, an organization that honors this part of American history. Because the 250th anniversary of the Stamp Act is coming up this March 22nd, DAR has decided to make “a colonial family’s reaction to the Stamp Act” their topic. The Stamp Act imposed a tax on books, newspapers, playing cards and other paper products. All the colonists had to pay the tax. None had a voice in establishing it. This tax is important in history because it led the colonists to argue that they should not be taxed without meaningful representation.
In the months after the Stamp Act, colonists protested. Violence broke out. The Sons of Liberty formed. (They were an organized group of colonists, capable of elaborate forms of protest.) Tea was memorably dumped in the Boston Harbor. Ultimately, the British and the Colonists gathered on either side of the battlefield. The first shot went off. We still do not know which side fired it. The American War for Independence had begun. The DAR essay competition will continue to unfold over the next several months. Even now, however, everyone who participated was a winner because every participant learned something important about how our country was formed. Flag Football so far, has been an amazing season. First we have the blue team an amazing team who works together and got two wins in the entire season. The star quarterback for the blue team is James Bamshad a eleven year old boy who is an amazing football player. The rest of his teammates are Benji Stein, Nick Nehorayan, Nick Dardashti, Tyler Moshfegh, Benjamin Goldenstein, Pierce Gabayzadeh, Daryn Shabbuie, Noah Satey, and Jacob Melamed.
Next is the white team. The white team consisted of Troy Yroshalmiane, Eli Emmanuel, Zach Karubian, Eliot Lichman, Jacob Shak, Ethan Pakravan, Matan Bendor, Ethan Aaron, Aiden Hashem, Sivan Bendor and Gavin Gabay. The white team worked hard together to get four wins this season out of seven games. Why was 6 afraid of 7?

You also have three coaches who help you; Mandy Bolkin, Bethany Speilberg, and Doug Lichtman. There are also debate meetings on Wednesday at lunch time and Friday after school from 3:30 to 5:00. We also have tournaments that all of the debaters work really hard at to make their speeches stand out. Each of them have three topics to debate about and 5 minutes to speak for all topics. All of the debaters have a team that they work with and come up with a pro and con list with each of the topics because they do not tell you what side you are on until the tournament. We will also have an upcoming tournament in January at Wise School debating whether the driving limit be changed to 18 years old, should college football be banned, and super packs.
At the debate team meetings on Friday you also get snacks for example different kinds of popcorn regular, buttered, and caramel corn. There is a choice needed to be made.
