Dear Parents,
It was a short, but sweet week. We began the week talking about Tu B' Shevat. On Tu B' Shevat we celebrate the New Year of the trees. Trees are a symbol of life, a symbol of the Jewish people. The children may plant trees, as well as collect money for trees in Israel, and enjoy a variety of fruits. We had a great group discussion about why trees are an important part of our world. The children became aware that trees do a lot for us and for our environment. They all participated and gave so many different answers as to why they thought trees were important. Some of the dialogue we heard was that trees provide shade, give fruit, help keep our air clean, provide wood for building, paper for writing, and homes for animals. After our discussion, we went on a tree hunt around the school. We pointed out all the different kinds of trees and talked about what made them different. From very tall trees, short trees, fruit trees, ones that were smooth, and others that were rough. They explored the bark and the different textures on them. We talked about the parts of the tree and how the roots are their life line. The children said that some trees seemed tall enough to touch the sky, and so big around that they wanted to hug them, and that's exactly what they did. Each child found a tree that was special to them, said what the liked about it, and gave it a big hug. We captured the moment on camera. We had a great opportunity this week to join Rm. 9 with Rabbi Sari and Cantor Emma. The children learned Tu B' Shevat songs and listened to fun stories. Shabbat was festive as the children enjoyed challah and went to the Temple. Thank you to the Tavakoli family for joining us and making the day more memorable.
