We started off the week putting out a big book for the children to explore. This book is called “Homes Around the World.” We had a discussion last week in the sukkah about the similarities and differences from the sukkah to the houses we live in. Using ideas from our Wise Learning Process Curriculum, we discussed the concept of similarities and differences. Following up our conversation after sitting in a sukkah, the children were able to list a lot of similarities and differences between a sukkah and a house. Here is what some of them said: “A house and a sukkah hold people in them.” “We walk into a house and a sukkah.” “A house and a sukkah have walls, but they look different.” “Houses have windows and doors.” “Houses have roofs.” Houses have balconies.”
Following our conversation about similarities and differences, we moved onto our next holiday of Simchat Torah. After we danced around the temple with the Torahs, we were able to have a meaningful conversation about similarities and differences from a Torah and a book. When we were at temple a child said, “We need to turn the page in the Torah to start from the beginning.” This led beautifully into the conversation about the pages of a Torah and the pages of a book. We asked the children, “What are some similarities or differences between a book and a Torah?” “They both have letters.” “A difference though is that the letters are different. One has English and one has Hebrew letters.” “The Torah uses something to point and read on the Torah, but a book does not have one.” “The Torah also has a decoration to put on top.” “A Torah has a covering and a book has a book jacket on it or a covering page.” “There are no pictures in the Torah, so that means it is different than a book because a book has pictures.” We collaborated with Coach Danny to emphasize our lessons on Similarities and Differences. Coach Danny taught a new game with similar skills to the last game we played. The main goal was to talk about similarities and differences between the rolling dodgeball game and the new game rolling knock down. The children learned a new game called rolling knock down. We discussed similarities and differences between the last game rolling dodgeball. “They are similar because we roll the ball in both games.” “It is similar because we are using a ball.” “It is the same because if the ball goes through our cone, it is our turn with the ball.” “A difference is that we are knocking over a ball, not hitting a person’s foot.” “A difference is that we are able to kick it sometimes too.” We had our first tour for prospective parents in the Early Childhood Center here at Wise. We were asked to make a special snack to serve to the families. Our children really enjoy the process of baking goodies. We had an abundance of apples so we decided to make mini apple muffins. The children loved measuring out ingredients and mixing it all together. They chopped the apples themselves too. We are really enjoying the whole process of cooking and can’t wait to explore cooking more.
